You're absolutely correct ... my choice of words was incorrect regarding this situation. Saturn is not "blocked" because it's in front of the Milky Way, so let's try "obscured or visually diminished" due to the backlighting imposed by the Milky Way. Saturn is visible, but does not stand out like the other two planets. Thanks for the catch.

Nice, very nice, except I don't understand what you mean by Saturn is blocked by the milky way. Since Saturn is way closer to earth, about roughly 800 million miles, than any of those stars, how can it be blocked by them!? You can clearly see Saturn in the photo, you just have to know which dot it is (I'm sure you know which one it is). If I were replying with my PC instead of my tablet I'd mark Saturn but since I'm using my tablet, I won't. Again, nice photo.

Mars on the extreme left, Jupiter on the right. Saturn is actually blocked from view by the Milky Way.

Taken with Nikon D800E & Tokina 11-20mm @ 17mm. 30 second exposure @ f/2.8 with ISO 6400. Facing mostly south and a bit westerly on July 18th 2018 @ 12:50am, shooting across the Snake River at the Guffey Bridge in southwest Idaho.

Twenty nine wild mustangs were released back into their home range within the Owyhee Mountains of Idaho after being captivated for almost three years. They had been rounded up after the horrific Soda Fire of August 2015, that destroyed all in its path, including the mustangs grazing lands.
To watch these powerful, athletic and graceful creatures regain their freedom was inspiring. You could almost see the joy expressed in their majestic movements.

I looked on YouTube. This is a traveling air show with multiple videos taken at different locations. This one from 2015 is pretty good. The P40 is the real deal. The "Japanese" planes are not. I don't think that any of the real ones are left.

Thanks for sharing that ... I had never seen any videos of this group.

Also the P-40 did not participate in the performance I saw this past weekend.

Frank - great shot. I too have never experienced this at an air show. If you could share, where was this show? Best, JimR

Jim,

The air show, Gunfighter Skies, was held at the Mountain Home Air Force Base in Mountain Home, Idaho.

Very nice picture! What is so amazing about that infamous day is no Japanese, with the intent to wipe out America's response, from the Admirals down to all the pilots who flew over them, shoot not one hole in all the large fuel tanks setting on the hill above Pearl Harbor. Destroying those fuel tanks would have been a devastating blow and taken America almost a year to rebuild and restock, seriously delaying our effort to stop the Japanese war machine.

You are sooooooo right. Also, if they had hit the dry docks, we would not have been able to repair the damaged ships in a timely manner. Pulling those ships back to the mainland would have been a major task and delayed retaliatory actions immensely. With the availability of the repair facilities and the local stored fuel, we were back in a fighting stance much sooner than the enemy had planned on.

Stunning. Did the ground shake during the show as I imagine it did on that fateful December 7?

Yes, the ground did shake, but it was the intense heat from all the way across two runways that took me by surprise. I've been in battle, but the show vividly reminded about the effects of total surprise ... the confusion, explosions, adrenalin spikes, heat, sky filled with enemy planes, etc. Very thought provoking. I salute all those that have served and put themselves in harms way.

This presentation was fabulous !!!

Airwolf, I was standing in the very front of the spectator section, located across the runways from the action.

A total of seven aircraft continuously assaulted the airfield in a mock raid, giving the crowd in attendance a taste of what it was like during the bombing and torpedo raid on Pearl Harbor.

This was the absolute best airborne multi aircraft display that I have ever witnessed at an air show. The finely crafted choreography was executed with precision, timing and control.

This boat was powered by a helicopter jet engine. Compared to the other boats it was very quiet, but it was extremely fast.
