Yes, you're quite right. What I really meant to suggest was that, certainly to a young fresh faced student in the 60s, who at the time had only recently mastered exposure, depth of field and ASA (remember ASA?) but had only a vague notion of push processing or multigrade papers, film was far less forgiving than a RAW file and hence it was important to get it right in camera.
