When you hear all this debate about IS vs non IS, the original (ver I) of the EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS is one of those lenses that exhibits the 'turn off IS' internet advice this is now mistakenly and universally applied to all lenses. The original (ver I) does not have the technology to detect a tripod. You'd be better without IS or the vII or vIII IS models.

Regarding a Japan (non N America) source, why? All the many versions of the EF 70-200L zooms are widely popular. It seems virtually impossible a better deal cannot be had closer to home.

Thanks CHG..Prices from Japan sellers are better but is it worth the potential problems ie having to ship back.

I will not purchase a non-IS lens unless it is a focal length and aperture that I absolutely need.
Having IS makes a huge difference when handholding for any subject. I have turned it off to see what the bad old days were like and the extra motion in the viewfinder drove me nuts.
Those are my thoughts on having IS.

Thanks Arch.

IMHO, an IS lens IS a requirement for wildlife, especially for b.i.f., so you are heading in the right direction. However, also my opinion, 200mm is the SHORT end for wildlife, so why not entertain a 100-400 or a 150-600? Reach is everything with wildlife, especially birds. Of course sticking with your camera's own lenses costs more, but the results will usually be better, but not always. Many of the third party lenses get very close to the camera manufacturers choices as far as image quality goes, however the native ones are typically winners in the focus speed and accuracy areas.

I see that your avatar is an image of the bird, so if you do a lot of shooting at 200mm and don’t need high SS for your subject, IS will allow you to shoot at a lower SS and ISO without camera shake (which can certainly occur with a 3Lb lens), which will lower noise and increase DR. It’s also useful when panning moving objects. There are multiple versions of this lens. In addition to the non IS version you have, there is an EF 70-200 f2.8L IS USM versions I, II and III with each IS version slightly higher performance and substantially higher price. I’d say the IS is a definite improvement, and which version you buy will depend n your budget. The version I is going for ~s800, the version II ~$1100, and the version III maybe $1400-1500 (all used prices)

Hi Trix, Appreciate your thoughts. I guess I was not clear enough. The lens I mentioned are in my watch list on Ebay. I am also checking Keh. They are about 40 minutes away. Prices are higher there as well at MPB and Usedphotopro. I bought from all three in the past.

BTW. The red shouldered hawk was shot with a Pentax K20D and a Tamron 28-200 f 3.5-5.6 DL(really old school)

I did a search here. Found nothing. If you have, please share your experience. I have the 70-200 2.8 non IS and the next model which is IS in my Watchlist on Ebay. Your thoughts on non IS vs IS would be appreciated..

Wonderful photos. I visited in 2009 or 2010 and got to the bridge and turn back. Always regret it. You've inspired me to try again even though I'll be 76 in December. New workout starting tomorrow.

Nice Rusty. I am a Pentax and Canon guy. Have some older Pentax that I should try. Which brand adapter did you use. I don't have any Super Taks only PK mounts.

I'm selling as I have the 70-300 IS USM ll and have no need for a 55-250 lens. Got this lens as part of package recently from the Canon store. I used it a few times to make sure it works. I'm asking $200.00. Shipping included to lower 48 states. Out of the country for the next 3 days. I may not be able to respond. I have not registered it with Canon so I imagine a buyer will get the 12 warranty
