AnimatorDVsimple is an excellent free program which you may download, for time lapse.I use it,and with a wee web cam out an attic window and get super time lapse movies of cloud formations, sunsets etc. Give it a try since it is free and has all the controls you need.

If you have a bucket load of spare cash, this topic probably won't apply to you.

I do not own one, but I do collect and use old lenses and a moderately priced fisheye has come on to the market, but I just cannot see the point of it. I could spend an hour or two taking circular distorted photos then boredom would set in. At about £400 for the lens, 4 hours of use = £100 per hour, then put the lens away.

Is there a real - practical - use for such a lens or are they just to produce fun effects?

Originally created for use by astronomers to photograph the whole sky at night, on a plate camera, most of the cheap ones poor quality and fall off at the edges; only useful for a bit of “fun” now and then.

I am using Picasa because it lets me save my photos at 800 megs so I can publish them on my website. I like the simple editing tools also. So my question is,,,,,,is there any other programs like that available?

I use PhotoScape as well as Picasa (and Microsoft's ICE for panoramas). All free.
If your not a "pro" or a graphic designer and you need PS, have serious think about the quality of pictures you are taking.

I suggest that a bridge camera such as a Fujifilm 4500 (about 90 GB £s) is a good place to start - good zoom and ISO range lots of frames per second to capture action and nothing to think about but what you are shooting; then later think about SLRs and lenses.

I find it mildly amusing that there is so much negativity in USA about gear purchased from China. Having purchased cameras, filter, extension tubes at home and abroad it appears most of the gear is made in, or at least assembled in China – even the souvenirs I purchased on my last trip to New York City were made in China.
Let’s face it the first thing you do when you buy a UV/Skylight filter to keep muck and spume off a lens, is look for distortion by examining the reflection on both surfaces visually – I have yet to find distortion on a £5 ($7) filter from China which would cost £20 - £30 in the UK.
Maybe there are good manufacturers of cameras and accessories in the USA and if so American photographers should support them – I really do not know but dismissing everything “made in China” out of hand is not very objective.
Possibly other UHH readers can enlarge on this?

May I suggest you try one of the Fujifilm bridge cameras - they have advantage of an eye level view finder (being more like a small SLR) and superb optics - I have owned several of the range over a period of 10 years. A wee bit bulkier but very versatile.

Since I'm only an amateur photographer I simply can't see myself spending lots of money for Photoshop. Would anyone have any suggestions about what would be a fair substitute for that software for a bit less money ?

Thanks !

I have said it before, but if you are an amateur you will need nothing more than Picasa, free from Google. I retired from pro photography after 40 years using film, moved into digital over the last ten years, and only need Picasa (& occasionally Photoscape to correct perspective, also free). If you “need” Photoshop seriously think about the quality of the images you are taking; but try Picasa first.

Hi all,

I will be in Manhattan for a few days, staying very close to Times Square.

Other that the obvious places like Grand Central and the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building.

Does anyone know of any places to get some good shots in.
From what I have read, Manhattan is a fairly safe place to be, Any suggestion on what to avoid would also be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, I want to have a safe and happy trip.

Just back from a two week stay in NYC – it’s like Aladdin’s Cave a gem at every turn.
During the day the Metro is a safe and cheap way to travel to most place and full of interesting characters. The Staten Island Ferry is a free way to get across to the island, passing the Statue of Liberty, and back on the next ferry if you wish. If you go on line you can buy a ticket which get’s you admission to a selection of venues at a bargain price and it saves you queuing (which I discovered was joining a “line” in the USA) St. Patrick's Cathedral is covered in scaffolding at present and mobbed with tourists. There are night tours which take you to places like Fulton’s Landing under the Brooklyn Bridge where you can get that classic shot of the bridge by night.
I found the folk in NYC to be friendly and helpful, service food good and cheaper than in Scotland and generally had a fantastic time. Oh! And I took a few snap too.

It's Olivia Newton John, who, by the way, supposedly practiced her polishing sk**ls on John Travolta. Oh, and the fellow just to the right of her is a young Mitt Romney. He had bought the service station to keep it from going bankrupt, then reorganized and sold it.

Okay, what do I win Croce?

No! ONJ was born in 1948, same year as myself, she would only have been 7 years old!

Last November I visited New York City, and being from Scotland my mobile (cell) phone would not work. I understand now that I need a “quad” band phone to use it here and in the USA. In the movies I see the “baddies” always use “burner” phones, which they bin, but when I asked in major retailer in NYC it was going to cost about £50+ for a simple phone to use during my holiday; over here I can buy a cell phone for £20 plus a SIM card for £5 and off I go .Is there any way I can obtain a cheap phone in the States for the two weeks I am going to be back in New York City, this Month, taking some more photographs of the amazing city?
I will be staying in a hotel near the Empire State Building – like, two streets away.Any sensible suggestions will be highly appreciated.

See you learned that Picassa is actually Greek for WTF!

I find it interesting that most of the folk who criticise "Picasa" do not know how to spell it!

I'm a the point of going over the edge. Really. Can anything be more frustrating than working with Picassa? (Yeah, there's lots of things worse, but right now I can't think of any) I.E.,--where did my list of folders on the left side go? I've got some of the recent ones; but the old ones are gone. All the pictures seem to still exist in "My pictures"; but the folder titles seem gone from the computer. Why are the thumbnails unclear and appear covered with gauze? Why are the icons on the bottom so indistinct that I can barely see them? Why are the icons spread willy-nilly over the page? This has been a problem from the beginning. (No. not a problem with monitor brightness or contrast settings.) I want to uninstall and reinstall the latest version (3.9?) and start over, but the "install new version" seems to just proliferate all the problems of the old version. Why is the interface one of curt, cryptic, one word choices on pull down menus that just send you to more pull down menus. If you don't know where those words send you, and you click to experiment, you end down some inescapable morass. Yes, I've gone to UHH "search" and read many postings, but I don't see my problems. I've tried Picassa "Help", but if you don't know how to describe a problem in their terms, what do you do? Anyone else feel the way I do? END OF RANT. (for now, maybe, I guess)

My! My! You are wee bit upset....Picasa is a free, simple to use program I have use it exclusively for my digital work for 10 years. If you read the instructions as you go along, when you load it it is intuitive to use. Slow down, relax, take your time and think about what is happening; try things out and see what they do – you cannot harm your original images (unless you click on “delete from disc” which would be daft at any time!) Your images are safe in the “My Pictures” or equivalent area of your PC and will remain there untouched by Picasa. After using it for a short time you will find it is very capable and covers everything you need to do to an image of reasonable quality. It is not a substitute for photoshop but then, unless you are a graphic designer or a high end “pro”, you will not need anything else to tweak and tidy up your images. Go back, re-install Picasa and try again – honestly you will find it very satisfying to use once you get the hang of it.
