I agree tdekany. The one inch sensor is anathema with the Nikon 1 systems and perfectly alright with other manufactures, even praiseworthy. I have no problem with that. It just makes assembling a kit for a friend and relative that much easier and cheaper. If you want to get into "Mirrorless" for little money Nikon 1 is the way to do it. (Used).

Just use it in live view mode. I have the Nikon1 J1 which has no viewfinder, I never missed the viewfinder. I hold the camera about a foot away, compose and shoot.

My entire family are Nikon 1 users. My Son has an S1 and loves it. I shoot with the V1 and if my viewfinder broke I would continue to use it from the review screen.

I own Nikon 1 J1 and J5 mirrorless cameras. The cameras get limited use - such as when I capture images ‘on-the-fly’ at family gatherings or traveling - never used them for photography services provided to clients. I especially like these smaller designed Nikon mirrorless devices because they have the capability for superb image quality captures - and they are so light! In my humble opinion, I don’t believe mirrorless cameras are ‘the future’ of digital photography, as I have heard some people proclaim. I believe both the DSLR and Mirrorless camera designs are here to stay - and will continue to co-exist. I think this is similar to how laptops and desktops have continued to co-exist. There has been chatter of people wanting Nikon and Canon to design and release full frame mirrorless cameras – my question is - Why? I am quite sure the engineers at these shops can make a mirrorless full-frame camera by simply ditching the mirror, and in the case of Nikon retaining the F mount with compatibility to Nikkor lenses from the past half-century. What I don’t see a benefit of or redesigning a full frame DSLR to a Mirrorless design, other than providing a minuscule weight drop.

Have attached samples from my archive of Nikon 1 J1 and J5 images.

Cheers!

I shoot with a Nikon 1 S1 and a Nikon 1 V1 bodies. I find most of the pictures remarkable and am using my DSLR's only for special projects now.

Nikon's 'One Inch' sensor is much larger than the sensors in cell phones (which produce images many people love), but slightly smaller than the 'Micro Four Thirds' sensor which so many 'Photo Enthusiasts' love. It has it's place in the photo community....as a great Travel Camera tool, and as a Landscape Imaging tool. Some folks will love it, and others won't. How well it suits you depends upon what sort of photos you shoot, and how large you like to print them. If you want something larger, you can always go back to a Medium Format film system, like my Mamiya RB67. Dissing the One Inch sensor, while praising the M4/3, sensor, is kind of silly.

Yes it is silly and that is exactly what happened review after review when the V1 was first released.

As you can tell I own many DSLR's and I love them, however they are heavy and so are the lenses for this 72 year old and when I want to go light I grab my V2 or V3. I can chase the grand kids with the light weight all day and not tire out. People who have never shot with these cameras don't know what they are missing, I only hope Nikon does not discontinue this line.

I agree with you Bruce. It is one of the best kept secrets in Photography. All because Nikon chose a 1" sensor for its Nikon 1 System. The damage had been done to this system even before product was released for sale. All revolving around that Sensor perceived to be too small. To build a $1500 mirrorless system for less than $200.00 is remarkable. That's what I did and I am glad I did. I thank God for every bad review I have read about the Nikon 1 System.

I have the V2 and V3 with all the lenses, it is actually a very good camera when you don't want to lug the big DSLR's around and considering the price is a bargain. I also have the T1 adapter for putting my DSLR lenses on the V series and that also works well. The image quality out of the V series is on par with my DSLR's, and the attached photograph was taken with the V3 and the 70-300mm lens. I can't tell you whether to have the camera repaired or get a new one, but I can tell you that there is a time when you will want to shoot with a lighter camera and there is nothing wrong with this series.

I shoot with my Nikon V1 80% of the time. Buying used it is the best bargain in Mirrorless Cameras today. When I hear people say, "Don't waste your money and get it fixed." They simply don't know what they are talking about and it is doubtful they have ever shot with a Nikon 1 series Camera. The naysayers actually help we users of the Nikon 1 systems. They help to keep the used price down of both camera bodies and lenses. That being said bitch all you want about Nikon 1 cameras. You are only helping the fans of this camera.

I don't know about others, but my D90 also has the top LCD info screen too. And I know what you mean about the D50. I would never part with my D90 either. It may not have all the bells, whistles and more mega pixels as the newer models, but it captures great images and is built like a tank.
I have other DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, but I seem to use the D90 more. It's like true and trusted friend to me.

Agree. The Nikon D50 was my first DSLR when I made the transition to Digital. The camera is built like a tank and I have never had one problem with it. I simply would not part with it. I have a dedicated 18-200 Nikon VR lens that lives on my D50. It is always ready to go when I want to feel Nostalgic.

Agree Soul Dr. There is something about the D50 the others don't have however. For one thing they have a top of the body LCD screen readout. Of course they also have a autofocus motor built into the body. I still grab my D50 with the 18-200 VR lens attached and shoot some amazing pictures with it during the summer. Would not part with it.

Mshooter is again correct. Nikon did not stop making entry level camera's without focus motors.... The 3xxx and 5xxx series bodies do not have focus motors. The lens you bought requires a focus motor.

Nothing fishy here. It's the way it was built. Buy a more expensive camera with a focus motor and you will be fine, although the the lens is not a superior product.

Or buy a D50 in good shape. You can pick one up for $30.00 and they still take amazing pictures. I have been through 5 iterations of DSLR's since I bought my D50 but I have never thought about selling that Camera. It takes a licking and keeps on ticking. ( Of course the D50 has a lens motor built into the body.)

You camera requires an "AFS" lens, you will have no autofocus with an "AF" lense because your camera does not contain a mechanical focus drive system.

One of the reasons I have never parted with my D 50.

I buy many items from Amazon. Most arrive as described. On the rare occasions that I've been dissatisfied, Amazon has paid the freight for the return. The return process is easy; print a label and either drop the package in a UPS box or take a larger package to a UPS store.

Besides the ease of shopping online, I buy from Amazon because my charity, the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, receives a donation from most of my purchases. Rather than shopping on Amazon.com, I shop at smile.amazon.com. (owned by Amazon -- the same products and prices). When registering for the first time, you can designate a charity. Then, when purchasing, all eligible items (most) produce a donation to your charity.

I mentioned the product. no one here is going o solve the problem. If you read my posts you would know that. I am just alerting (that is all the post was meant to do; nothing else) everyone of my bad experience with Amazon and then the peanut gallery goes wild. s I said before, more than once I believe; that it is in the hands of my credit card company with a dispute.
Amazon offers a transcript of the interaction verbatim delivered to your email inbox when you are involved in a chat session with them. Any promises they make and any words they type are included in that transcript. I don't know if they do that in voice calls also but it is the very reason I interact with them via their Chat Facility. As I said my interaction with Amazon has been great over the years but there is no reason that this exchange should have gotten this far out of hand. Not when you are dealing with Amazon.

Agin, you have a comprehension problem if you think I am the problem!

If you approached Amazon with the same attitude you have shown here I can understand why Amazon would not be responsive. You tell us about a highly unstable item that has to be handled carefully in order to be usable. You received two bad shipments of the product. Neither shipment was satisfactory. Maybe you should buy from a local source to insure it is the way you want it. It seems to make no difference to you that the great majority of people commenting on this link are highly satisfied with Amazon. Amazon has always bent over backwards for me to make things right. I have interacted with them by both phone and Chat and have never had a problem with them understanding me or me understanding them. Incidentally, like others commenting, I have used them for many years and made countless purchases from them. On the contrary the opposite is usually true. They go the extra mile to satisfy a customer like the time they missed shipment on an expensive Car Starter and refunded my purchase price and told me if the lost item shows up at my doorstep just keep it. The following day it did show up and I have a State of the Art car starter for free. That is the Amazon I know and will continue shopping with.

I have been buying from Amazon for years and more and more I have been having problems with them. They let anyone sell anything they want without being screened to see if the seller is legitimate, if the information they give about the product is correct or even an out right lie. To try to counter this, call them and go over the product with a rep. Then the problems really escalate. You get a foreign rep who barely speaks English, is almost impossible to understand and they have no idea what you are talking about but try to BS their way through the conversation with you, wasting your time and only showing over and over again that they have no idea what you are saying. Then when you ask for a rep in the USA (which they are required by law to connect you), they either refuse to do so or put you through hell to get them to connect you. Then when you get to the US rep (if they finally do connect you), you are fed a bunch of lies that you find about later after you spent your money. Then you call back to get the problem resolved and you are informed that everything the rep told you was untrue; but Amazon will nothing to resolve the problem. zThen you are left with the final resort to file a dispute with your credit card company that can take several months to have it put to rest.

I have experienced this exact scenario the last tow times I tried to order an item at Amazon. Neither purchase was photo equipment, but the point is, why would one continue to keep purchasing from Amazon when they keep treating their customers this way. Has anyone else had similar experiences with Amazon with purchases? I personally, think that I am done ordering from them and highly caution others from doing business with them; they re rapidly getting wore and worse. I could give details btt it would be like a chapter in a book to explain step by step problems and why they were a problem but the routine is as described.

I have had just the opposite experience. Every Time there has been a problem with my account they take care of it for me to my satisfaction. Now they are using their own delivery people and they are having problems because of that. Example. A weekend in January, this year, I was scheduled to work on a Sunday. The weather forecast was -21 by Sunday morning. I knew I would have trouble starting my car and had to be to the airport and then work. I bought an expensive battery charger/car starter. It was supposed to be delivered on Saturday. It was not. I engaged the Amazon Chat forum and was told that something had gone wrong. I explained my situation and they said they would credit my account and give me a 6 months extension on my Amazon Prime. I asked what happens if the Charger shows up. The Chat person said you can just keep it . Sure enough it was delivered on Monday. She sent me a copy of the Chat session with her promise in writing to let me keep it if it was delivered. I received 6months extension on my prime account, the charger and the charge rebated to my credit card. I have always had service like that from Amazon.
