I guess we really know about periods now ;) . The link to Expose to the right was even more informative, if you can wade through the physics lesson.

Another note on links. Do not put a period at the end of a link.

I have been cutting double mats for 15 years with a pro style mat cutter, but I have to admit I didn't understand this discussion at all. I am interested in the extra spacing idea, I heard it is also great for charcoal and pastel drawings which I also do, but still haven't been able to get a handle on it. You put it in between the top mat and the bottom mat? If it goes under both mats, the edge of the picture itself would be visible...? So you put it between the two mats but back about a half inch, sort of out of site?Or do you let the edge of the foam core become part of the visible structure? What about bevel cutting the foam itself?

Between the 2 matts , back far enough that it does not show. You get a shadow effect between the matts.

Using 1/4 in foam board with a relief between matts of 1/2 in I inset the FB 3/4 in. Example... top matt opening 11 x 14 , picture matt 10 x 13 foam board opening would be 12 1/2 x 15 1/2 (can be cut like a matt in one piece or you can use strips ). Smaller framing with 1/8 in foam board, I use 1/2 in setback. Be aware that the rabbet grove in the frame needs to be deeper than normal to accommodate the extra thickness of another matt and 1/4 in foam.

These pictures were taken 40 min. apart. The wait can make a big difference in color. Generally the spectrum moves to the longer wavelengths (deep reds and purple) as the sun goes down. May not be better but it should be different. Not much water here but indirect light should just fine.

About 40min before
