Having not used anything except my particular setup, I really can't comment. I have a way of using mine that is comfortable and works for me, but others have different techniques. If the mono has a ball head built in, and it works for you, I say go for it.

Thanks for the feedback. You are right on what works for me....

I am looking into monopods and just wanted some advice.

Heyrob, what is your opinion of a ball head built on to the monopod versus a separate one like yours?

rpavich, thanks for the answers.

Regarding the height, when you set the foot a foot or so in from of myself, the Pythagorean theorem calculates the height of the monopod to be 71". That is my concern.

Any comments about no head versus built-in (on) ball head versus a separate head?

I am thinking of buying a monopod and have two questions. I am 70" tall. Most monopods are about 63". The tripod method seems to be method of choice. If that is true, then I would need a monopod of at least 72". Do you agree with that? Has anyone found one that long?

I will use the monopod for sports and low light settings. Some monopods come with a ball head. Does that provide sufficient mobility or should I by a separate head?

Thanks for the help.

I would prefer to shoot these head on for several reasons. The pictures contain extraneous and distracting elements because of the vanishing perspective. They also have limited depth of field making the doors further away from the camera annoyingly out of focus. (By time you stop down enough to get all the doors in focus, you may have too a slow shutter speed causing noticeable camera movement.) This creates the impression that the doors further away are less interesting or important. They may not be. Shooting head on keeps them all the same size or importance and in focus. I would stand back as far as possible and use a much longer focal length.

I would crop the picture to reduce unneeded foreground and background. Punching up the sharpness and saturation a bit would help.

And I would get rid of those swans. If you want something to break up the doors, have someone walk across them or a child playing in front of them.

Good luck. I hope this helps.

Very nice demonstration. Thanks for posting it.

Good example of layer mask. "White reveals, black conceals."

To get back to your original question, ask yourself what you have used and would have like to have used. For me, the 18-200 mm lens was the answer. You may have the same answer or another one. I know this is not the highest quality or fastest lens but the price was in my budget. Anyhow, I do not think you can get a top quality lens in such a zoom. Weight was also a factor for me.

I think the 60D is a great camera. I bought it with 18-200 as the kit lens from B&H. Just shop around. I think you will find this combination.

Good luck.

There was a question the other day about camera straps and also an observation in another post about the way some of us carry our cameras. I for one have been guilty of carrying my camera with the neck strap just dangling just off the ground or maybe wound round my wrist. Like others here I just hate the manufacturer's strap around my neck. Anyway, I've ended up buying an Op/Tech USA wrist strap and used it for the first time today - having discarded the neck strap - and what a joy it is to use. It's really comfortable and the camera stays just where I want it - in my hand. And best of all, it was fantastic value, just over £7.

I bought the same strap and liked it. Very comfortable and functional. However, I was frustrated with not having my right hand free. Consequently, I bought this one: Black Rapid RS-7 Camera Strap. I find it far superior. It is comfortable, functional and secure.

PS Are you a retired constable?

Found a roll of black & white 35mm film in the back of the refrigerator I used to use for film and processing chemicals. It is now used for a temperature controlled environment to store my back up CDs and DVDs.
It had been expired for a few months but I decided to shoot it up. I still had a 35mm film camera that would take my EOS lenses. Had to buy a battery for it and went out to shoot up the roll.
I've been shooting digital since the Sony Mavica and totally digital since just after the first Canons came out.
It was a total shock to see how lazy I've let myself become. After every shot, I kept looking down at the back of the camera to see if I'd captured the image I wanted.
It was an eye-opening experience. I had to slow down - think about each shot and all the variables that go into getting a correct exposure and the best composition.
In the process of shooting the 36 exposures, it became fun again.
I don't have the chemicals to do my own processing, so I have to send the roll off and wait. I do so with great anticipation - just like in th e"good old days".
I'm not ready to give up my 5Ds, but I'm going to start shooting a roll of film one in a while to get myself back in the groove.
The challenge - get out your film camera and shoot a roll. See if you've become lazy also.

Try Chrome's settings for managing add-in's. Nasty of them if you cannot remove it through appwiz.cpl. Also, try spy bot and malwarebites.

A second thought on this.

Remember the endless discussions on whether to post-process or not and getting the perfect picture in the camera to avoid post-processing? Just imagine trying to get this light bulb just in the camera! The Photoshop portion of the video was more amazing than the actual shoot. Like a true professional, he made it look easy. What a challenge to me to foresee the final product and then to figure out what tools to use. Amazing.

Rpavich, I never figured out the problem but as far as I remember, it was my standard workflow. Will be more careful next time. No, I did not make a virtual copy. Some other subtle misdirection on my part.

That is one thing I like about LR. You can put the file anywhere and LR keeps track of it. 90% of my post-processing is now done in LR.
