Its dust spots. These are impossible to avoid if you use a zoom lens that extends as it zooms because in order to extend they have to fill that newly created space with air. This air comes through the lens and lensmount on the body. When you zoom back then that air is expelled, along with all the dust and contaminants that were present when it was sucked into the lens. This dust gets expelled directly into the body as well and some of it accumulates there and will eventually end up on the sensor. Even if you have never changed the lens in all the time you own the camera you will get this dust on the sensor, its just a fact of life with DSLR cameras, ANY of them.
Get yourself a puffer (rocket blower), read the sensor cleaning instructions, and clean it yourself for free, nothing to it.

Thanks M.T. I appreciate you looking and giving me your suggestion, I'll get a "rocket blower" right away.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my question, I know the sensor cleaning topic was discussed a lot this week, (timely for me).

After the last cleaning, the photo's were sharp & clear, then I photographing near the ocean, I use my 18-300 lens for most of my shooting, and some shots with my 85mm too, I guess I picked up quite a bit of dust.

I've had this camera for approx 9 months and have spots on the sensor almost since the day I got the camera, my local camera store has cleaned the sensor at least 3 times. I'm posting a photo and would like it if you can tell if this is a dust or oil spot issue and suggestions on what to do. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. Do you have a suggestion on how I can not have this happen again, or what I can do to correct this image? Is this a characteristic of shooting landscapes with a crop sensor camera, or is it a characteristic of a zoom lens?

I would appreciate help understanding how this happened, I was photographing NYC from Liberty State Park, some photo's look like I used a fish eye lens, the flag pole is leaning, which I don't think in person it is. I would like to know why this happened. My camera is a D7100 with an 18-300 lens. ~Thanks

Thanks for your advise, I love the sharpness of my 85mm prime, however in tight spaces it doesn't work well & that's my dilemma, do I add a 28mm or 35mm prime & a 50mm prime, are adding those prime lenses overkill? And look at a wide angle zoom lens to cover landscapes?

Thanks David, I like your choice of lenses, but wonder how much wider and useful a 14mm-24mm would be doing landscape photography?

My camera body is a D7100, I shoot a variety of subjects and video of the grandson. I have the Nikon 18-300 & an 85mm 1.8g for portrait. I would like a wide angle lens for Landscape & need a sharper faster lens for video indoor, tighter spaces, my thought is adding the Nikon 14-24 f2 g & a 28mm or 50mm prime, or both, for the video, is that overkill? I will eventually be upgrading to a full frame body so I don't want to buy any DX lenses. Thanks.
