Well said all. I thank you for the input and have decided to not buy that $2500 lens. My intent was to get the sharpness in the entire range of focal lengths that I have with my 100-400 lens. The 18-200 is a great lens, but it’s real tricky to get the clarity I want in my photos. I will rent some lenses in the 16-100 ranges to find the one that works best for me. I had read some reviews of the EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM and that will be my first experiment. Again, thanks for the input.

I had read some reviews that disparaged the sharpness in the wide end, but others that were very happy with it.

I like the idea of the faster lens. I will keep that as a possibility.

Buy a 1.4x or 2.0x doubbler instead.

I have the 1.4x doubler but was thinking of the versatility of the 100-300 and not having to carry another lens.

I am contemplating getting the Canon EF 28-300 f3.5-5.6L IS USM lens. I have an 18-200 IS USM lens and a 100-400 L glass lens already, but wanted the versatility of the new one. Am I jus GAS-ing or would this really be worthwhile?
Any info would be appreciated.

I rarely reformat the cards, I just use the move function and not copy when downloading to the computer. The photos all go to my 2tb WD Backup drive which clears the file space for new shots. Before transferring to the computer, I copy them to the cloud file on Dropbox so that I can access them anytime or anywhere I am. Each time you format, you can lose some of the file space on the card, so I keep formatting to a minimum. Not sure if it’s the best way, but it works well for me.

While visiting the family in Chattanooga we awoke to see some friends in the yard for Christmas.
Captured with a Canon 7d II, Canon 100-400 II L glass lens for the Bluejay and an 18-200 IS USM Canon lens for the squirrel.

Let’s have some fun and see a thread of our ONE favorite or best photograph of 2017.

First off, love your photo. Shows me how much work I need to do to get there from here. Here’s one of my favorites.
This guy just sailed over us while walking along Carlsbad State Beach in California. Pure luck.

Sorry Dave, I have a Canon 7D. My question is not so much about equipment as to why someone would use custom functions. What would one save there and why given the ever changing shooting conditions. Are they primarily for studio work or am I missing out by not understanding their usefulness?

As I am relatively new to the world of manual shooting, I went to a lecture at a Canon Learning Center to get ideas on how to setup and capture the last solar eclipse. I learned that the Custom function sets for my 7D II would allow me to merely switch to the manual settings that I had saved in either c1, c2 or c3 so that I could easily capture the moment when I pulled the solar filter and could get a decent shot of Bailey Beads and the Diamond Ring effect. As I am still learning how to use the settings correctly, my images came out fairly well, but could have been better. But if not for that ability to quickly change, I never would have gotten this image. There’s a small white dot lower left in the frame that I thought was a dirt speck, but it is actually the ISS. If I had set c3 to the right settings, I probably could have captured that better.

Pg.29 Nice to see an Orca in it's natural habitat. The detail in the download of the glacier is fantastic.

Dang! I gotta stop uploading the wrong files. Yup, that was an Orca. Not a Humpback.

I'm going to be in souther Utah this spring and we will be spending some time in Zion.

Does anyone know good locations for photography? Especially astrophotography, skyscapes, and light painting. I just got a Rokinon 14mm f2.8 and I'm eager to give it a go.

Thanks all.

If you want an iPhone app to help you plan a trip, try Photo Pills. Plug in the geo coordinates and it will help you plan for Milky Way shots. The planner can be set up for any location, time and date. Sun,Moon or constellations. It also has an Artificial Reality function that will show you with the iPhone camera what the shot composition will look like.

Good luck in your expedition. I will be trying my 11-14 mm this spring in Yellowstone and Montana. Hoping to get to Joshua Tree in March also.
