Duane I appreciate you commenting and respectfully disagree with FStoppers take on this scene...what we are doing as individual photogs is bringing home memories and, bringing home the best image we could muster. Besides, it is a fun outing and I took approximately 300 images with four different cameras from many different locations while in Zion. Don't think any of my photos from this Zion trip are unique to anyone other than me. If you have the ability to climb into the remote areas of Zion you may find the scenes you covet...no different than Yellowstone or Yosemite. Does/would FStopper have the same take on Yosemite's El Capitan or similar icons...
Duane I appreciate you commenting and respectfully... (show quote)

Well said my friend. This is a stunning photo!

A fun set MT! I don't know if I will ever get to Lubbock Texas, but if I do...... I will totally geek-out at the world's largest windmill collection.

I have held off posting shots from the Arches portion of the Mighty Five trip because Cany 143 is the definitive source for photos of that area. I do, however, post these to show potential visitors the world of photo ops that await you from a tour van with little (except for Delicate Arch) hiking involved. As to Delicate Arch, unlike its name, the hike to the arch (as opposed to the viewpoint of the arch) is labeled by the Park Service as strenuous and this 80 year old agrees with them. The shots are posted in the order that they occurred as we spent the day going into the park, circling through and coming out. I am sorry that I do not remember all the names of the formations, etc.

A very enjoyable set Mike. Your compositions and processing have produced the kind of fine documentary results I always hope for on my own photo/road trips. Nice work!

Mount Adams from Yakima, February 2017. Thanks for viewing!

I absolutely love this photograph Linda. It clearly illustrates scale and it wonderfully juxtaposes one of nature's more splended efforts (a volcano) with one of man's more splended efforts (that beatifully tidy orchard and farm). The fog plays a perfect role in partially obscuring the marks of humanity in this big place. I'm not sure how much you leaned toward cool blues in your processing but the results are appropriate. Very fine work my friend!

This Eurasian Wigeon was the first thing we spotted when arriving at Colusa NWR a few days ago. At first we thought it was a hybrid but when checking out my book, it appears to be a red-morph female. That may explain why she was trying to link up with a male American Wigeon. It was a sad sight to watch as they were all spurning her attempts to swim with them. We only see a handful of Eurasians each season.

Wow Katy, excellent photos of this rare visitor. Nice work! I never visit Colusa without spending time on the viewing platform searching for one of these strangers. I saw one there two years ago and failed to get an acceptable photo. These are good reference photos, bookmarked and saved with gratitude, thank you. I am happy for you my friend.

Cedar waxwings, a robin, and ??? Maybe a juvenile starling? I'm used to seeing their coats more iridescent, with colors + yellow beak. I also wondered about a juvie northern flicker since we have that species hang out around the apartments too.

Many thanks for viewing.

Delightful mouthsful! Caught in the act always makes me smile. Cedar Waxwings are so widely distributed and so rare in my part of the Bay Area, they are a stunning bird and I miss them. Also enjoyed your post processing topic. Yes, European Starling.

Here is one of five feeders in the yard. The cage on the right is for oilers. The one on the left is home made and usually contains general purpose feed, as inexpensive as I can find. In the center is a section of limb with a hole drilled in the side for suet. Above is an attached branch for birds to perch. The red piece is part of cone shaped baffle which makes it squirrel proof.

I don't normally shoot birds on the feeders...just pick them off as they perch. The brightness of the center image is due to the use of a flash with "Better Beamer" attached which narrows the beam of light and extend the distance or reduces the flash recycle time depending on the camera settings. The BB is intended for 300MM or more focal lengths...this was shot at 100MM with a 100-400 f4.5-5.6 at f10...at the recommended FL the light pattern would be uniform.

I shoot from a blind and am positioned 15-25 feet from the feeders. The birds are observant enough to know I'm in there even when wearing camo. The blind does provide a small edge and with close ups of birds every little advantage helps.

Thank you! I enjoy your work and appreciate this detailed description of your set-up. It is time for me to learn to use my Better Beamer!

Just returned from a week in Haines Alaska on the Chilkat River and Bald Eagle Preserve. Thousands of eagles congregating along the river feasting on chum salmon. All images were with a Canon 5D4, Sigma 150-600 Sport, ISO 1000-1600, SS 1/1000, and distances ranged from 100 yards to 25 yards.

This is an excellent set! I hope folks take the time to view these in download. You made great use of your time in Eagle land!
