Thanks for the additional info. If you were further away from your subject, more of your background would have been in focus, wouldn’t it? The background was just too close to the foreground for great bokeh, especially if you were already at f/5.6. So it’s not an art shot...it was a unique moment and you caught the event very well. More of a documentary shot. Nothing wrong with that. jak

Thanks for that clarification, jak. It makes sense!

Really nice series...and I don't know why you say "probably too close up". These are beautiful environmental portraits. Very sharp (with fairly shallow DOF) and beautiful color. How long did you have to wait for it to complete it's meal? I find the whole series fascinating. Thanks for sharing. jak

Thanks, jak! I thought I might get better bokeh if I was a bit further away. I thought the shots were too busy. It actually was munching very quickly, not more than a few minutes for the body to disappear. I initially thought it was a bee.

I could tell it was having a meal when I shot these photos but I didn't know what was being consumed. The photos revealed it was eating a smaller, different variety of dragonfly, the one that is much more commonly seen here. They are orange, white, and black.
(with Nikon 200-500 lens, probably too close up)

I definitely like the blur as it adds to the reality of what happened there--lots of action. But I always question my own photos with blur. It will be interesting to see what the majority say.
By the way, did you notice the two duplicate feet on the left side?
