I've been to MoBOT several times, but never the art museum. I have a pano from the inside of the arch and pics from outside of it, too. Don't know about either of the parks...been to the zoo, too. I remember something about a sculpture park near the butterfly house...I might see about that. Also, last year I heard about an estuary near Peoria (?). I might even go down to Giant City. I used to go to SIUC and visited a few times there.

Laumeier Sculpture Park is great, there is also a sculpture city park in downtown area. Washington University has a great campus on west side of Forest Park. My house is on Flora Place, in front of old entrance to MoBot and there are great homes here in Compton Heights, near the 19th century water reservoir and its tower on Grand Avenue.

Spring break is coming up at the end of March, and being a bus driver, that puts me out of work (fortunately, two days are weekends). I'd like some ideas of where to go for day trips to take pics of...I might do an overnight or two somewhere if it's extraordinary.

The Missouri Botanical Garden is like a royal park; the huge Forest Park has the art Museum, the Missouri Museum, the zoo and much more; Lafayette Park and Benton Park have almost exclusively 19th century homes around them; don't forget the Arch.

Magnificent images of this fabulous monument. Worth waiting for, but you could have used a good-looking person for scale.

I worked as an artist for many years. I judged my work and the work of others using several aspects. 1) Composition 2) Color contrast 3) Technique 4)Historical or documentary value 5) Emotional impact or sentimental value
and 6) The intent or purpose.

These helped me to be less partial and more objective in judging my own work, have you used any approaches that affect you view of your own work?

You just answered your own question. You have already received several illuminating comments from professionals, some of whom advise you to search for the truth that is relevant to you. You may begin by studying the acknowledged masters of the past, the great painters and sculptors whose works are now exhibited in museums and discover their secrets. Most of all, enjoy being creative!

I took quite a few shots that day. It really was that still - this is not a long exposure, 0.3 of a second, if I recall right. There were no photoshop tricks or anything, either.

I did have to watch my positioning, since there was a group of kids from a church there fishing over on my right, so every now and again there would be ripples moving out from their lines. It is well shrouded by trees, so not much wind would get to it, although I cannot remember if there was any or not. It wasn't a very nice day, weather-wise, especially for July...

Thank you for the details, very interesting. I think there is real magic in still water and reflected images and I am sure many photographers love it as well. You have found a great spot, you should go back to it!

You are absolutely right about the stillness, it's like a mirror. The Greeks compare this absolute calm to olive oil. It's even rarer to catch the sea as calm as your pond.

Wonderful capture of a beautiful orchid. Do you happen to know its full scientific name? I believe it is a Cymbidium hybrid.

There is a legitimate and old camera shop called: "47th Street Photo" that I remember from the time I lived in NYC (1960's). I believe "42nd Photo" -a new store- capitalizes on people's ignorance of the city. Stores like these are tourist traps and have always existed at this area of NYC, including -and especially- the famous 5th Avenue. It's beyond comprehension how and why the city has tolerated them for so long. I am also surprised that people on this list still fall for this trap, even after repeated warnings. It's not fair to "47th Street Photo" that I believe has remained legit to this day and, if I remember correctly, is also run by orthodox Jews like B@H.
