If photographers were as loyal to their spouses as they are to their camera brands, the divorce rate would be cut in half.

No need to wait for a full frame mirrorless - they have been around for several years. The Sony A7xxx series are all full frame cameras. Fuji and Hasselblad have Medium Format mirrorless cameras for anybody with the money to buy one.

Mira,
The Sony A6xxx series were originally intended for folks just like you (and me) - folks who wanted to step up from their compact cameras and cell phones to a 'serious' camera. The A6000 turned out to be so good that it caught the attention of serious enthusiasts and even some pro's. I read somewhere that 2 out of every 3 A6000 buyers are photographers who already had DSLR's and were switching to mirrorless systems. As you will have deduced by now, there are those who have embraced the new technology and those who will have to have their DSLR's 'pried from their cold dead hands'. Just as there are those who refused to switch from view cameras to SLR's, or from film to digital or from cd's to vinyl there will always be aficionados who will refuse to switch from DSLR's to Mirrorless. However, there is no doubt that the industry is trending towards mirrorless because that is where the growing market is. DSLR's are the past and may still be the present, but mirrorless is the future.

Having said that, ANY modern photo device - including cell phones and compact cameras, DSLR or mirrorless is capable of taking outstanding photographs that could only have been achieved by skilled professionals with top class gear thirty years ago. One of the unspoken benefits of buying higher priced gear nowadays is that it eliminates a lot of excuses for taking mediocre photographs and forces you to face your limitations as a photographer.

I really only know Sony so I won't offer a comparison with other manufacturer's. Within Sony world, I would recommend the A6500 (A6000 if price is major concern) along with the 18-105 mm f4.0 OSS G lens as your 'one' lens solution. Add the Sony Zeiss E 24mm f1.8 for beautiful landscapes and discrete street shots and the rather bulky full frame Sony FE 90mm 2.8 OSS G for outstanding macro and portraits. That would be really nice set-up and great for travel (without the 90mm)
Go to Best Buy and play with the A6500. Then go to the Canon / Nikon display and lift one of their better APS-C or FF cameras. If you can lift it without a grimace or a groan you are a better man than me.
Forget about shutter lag. That is a thing of the past.

I haven't retired yet, but I do see photography being a significant part of my retirement when I do. I am currently in a sort of pre-retirement phase. I could probably retire anytime now, but I really see no need to. Good health, a steady paycheck and flexibility at work allows me to travel abroad a couple of times a year and enough disposable income to build up some nice gear. I live in a very interesting and photogenic part of the country and I go out shooting nearly every weekend. I take classes, attend a camera club and photowalks and post a lot of pics here on UHH. Life is good and I am reluctant to change it unless I have to. I am afraid that if I have too much time on my hands I will get bored with it. However, I would love to have the time and means to spend more time in some of the places we have visited - like a whole month or two in Tuscany or island hopping in Greece or maybe taking a degree course in photography.

I have been looking into buying a new camera and narrowed it down between the Sony a7R II and the Canon 5D4. I have been a Canon user for over 30 years and have a lot of Canon glass, so finally decided to go with the Canon. I placed my order this afternoon on the Canon USA website and received an order confirmation. Later in the evening I received an email saying "We regret to inform you that your order has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused." There was no reason or explanation given. I called customer service, and they told me that their automated system had cancelled the order. They too could not tell the reason. Their "fraud department" was closed for the night, so they said if I placed the order again, it would likely be cancelled again. I called my bank to see if there was a problem with the credit card, and they said the charge had been approved.

Needless to say, I did not anticipate such sloppy service from Canon. You would think that if their algorithm for checking fraud identified a potential problem, a real human would check and perhaps call to try and verify the order.

Has this happened to anyone out there? I'm wondering if this is karma telling me to go with the Sony

If you haven't done it already, I suggest you check your credit report for any activities you don't recognize. Calling your bank about this specific charge is not enough. You are entitled to a free credit report annually from each of the credit reporting agencies. If you stagger the requests you can get a report every couple of months.

Trust your instincts. Go for the Sony.

If you don't want to be saddled with the considerable hassle of photographing and listing the items on eBay you can try eBay's 'Concierge' service. They charge a fairly hefty fee, but I believe it includes shipping charges, eBay fees and Paypal fees (?) and they do all of the work. The fee is on a sliding scale, so it may not be too bad for more expensive items.

Nice one Matt. Fall does seem early on the Cape this year. Not a lot of beach weather this year, but we had a very comfortable summer. Great weather for biking and kayaking.

Hello Friends,
I want to rent a mirrorless camera and lens and would welcome recommendations. I tried Lensgiant.com but they only have Canon and Nikon for mirrorless and I want Sony. Borrowlenses.com has a good assortment and good prices. I anyone familiar with them? Are there any other places I should try? Thanks in advance!

I have used Borrowlenses and found them very good. They do Sony cameras and have a great assortment of Sony and Zeiss lenses. I had the option of a physical pick-up location along my commute which was very handy. I didn't want to return it there so they gave me a pre-paid UPS label for the return. Smooth operation.

Bromfield Camera in Boston offer estate appraisals and will buy outright or sell on consignment.

https://www.bromfieldcamera.com/services

They are an old time camera store / Aladdin's Cave right in Downtown Boston. I haven't really dealt with them myself, but they have been there forever and they offered me a pretty decent price on a trade-in I was considering.
