I just recently got a near mint Sony Zeiss Vario Tessar T* FE 24-70mm F4 ZA OSS for around $700 on ebay and I am very satisfied with it. Just another option to consider.

I am amazed and have to laugh... I got black balled and put on an ignore list for offering constructive input on a photo in the photo gallery today even though the poster asked for opinions.

I can live with that... but it proves to me for the 200th time that many marginal members with marginal photo's posted only want false praise rather than learn or take advice from someone with professional editing experience.

Many times the obvious faults can be corrected and re posted to best illustrate an idea. Most web sites or in class education facilities work from the same photo...it's a given.

Never manipulate any one's "perfect" photo on the HOG... just hit the thumbs up button and offer a few fake words of praise...or maybe I won't bother to look any more.

Catchlight,
I was following the topic that you are referring to and I saw the OP's comments. I agree that the OP seemed a bit thin skinned, but to be brutally honest your edits were pretty awful. The phrase 'lipstick on a pig' comes to mind. You said you did it for fun, but it really looked like you were making fun of the OP's 'marginal' efforts. I would have been insulted and indignant if you did what you did to one of my 'marginal' efforts.

Thanks Repleo. I printed out your suggestions and we'll take that drive. We'll be staying in Lincoln for 6 days, which will give us time to drive it.

In fairness to your good wife, you should allow a couple of hours to hit the Outlet stores In North Conway.

My wife and I are going to Lincoln, NH for the fall foliage and then on to Boston for a week. It's our first trip there, and I'm in a dilemma on which lenses to bring. I use a Fujifilm X-T2, which is an APS-C sensor. I want to travel with a small bag, and had planned to take my XF50 mm f2 lens for after dark, and my XF16-55mm for walking around. Then I started wondering if the 10-24 should be used in Boston rather than the 16-55. The 16-55 is f2.8, and the 10-24 is f4. Any advice from those who have been there would be very much appreciated.

I would bring the 16-55. Otherwise you are leaving a big gap between 24mm and 50mm. The 16-55 should be plenty wide for both leaf peeping and streetscapes and you will be glad of the f2.8 for isolating details. I suggest you bring a tripod also for night shots. The Boston waterfront from in front of the Federal Courthouse is a favorite spot for blue hour / night shots. The 'North End' restaurant neighborhood is lively and atmospheric at night. Check the Boston area TV News sites for New England foliage maps for the best colors starting in a couple of weeks. If you time it right, a nice drive would be to head east on the Kancamagus Trail from Lincoln, then North through Bretton Woods past the Mt Washington Hotel and back through Franconia Notch or detour a bit further North to take the cog railway up to the top of Mt Washington. There was snow on Mt Washington last week. The ski areas typically run chair lifts to the summits during leaf season.

Enjoy your trip and post some pics when you get back.

My wife and I will be taking a European river cruise in a couple of weeks. I bought a power converter that will convert 220 to 110. However it will not convert 50 Hz to 60 hz. Accordingly the converter manufacturer advises that I only run the converter for 15 minutes and then leave it off 5 minutes. To me that's a formula for insanity while I'm trying to recharge my camera batteries that will take a couple of hours to recharge. Does anyone have a better solution?

As others have mentioned, all you should need is a plug adapter. However, if you have other devices that will need charging - e.g. phone(s), Kindle, tablet, wife's camera etc i suggest you get a USB multi charger as well. You plug the multi charger into the plug adapter and then plug the USB cables from your devices into the ports on the multi charger to charge them all at the same time. They are not expensive and are very useful at home as well.
Here is an example.

Try the Fotodiox site. They have an amazing number of adapters. You will have to browse through the entire collection manually because their search box is useless.

It is scary to think I remember when 2001 was the distant future. Come to think of it I remember when George Orwell's 1984 was the distant future !!!!

Yeah sure - it happened to a friend - wink, wink, nudge, nudge!!!! I believe you, thousands wouldn't.

To refuse to buy anything new or better until the usefulness of something has expired or reached exhausted capability; is simply childish. Houses, cars, tools, cameras, whatever; if one can responsibly afford something better and newer---then buy it and enjoy life.
My first digital camera was a Nikon 8700; a piece of crap next to what is available now--and I still have much to learn about digital photography.

You can't bring it with you!! There are no pockets in a shroud.
For all of the talk about the cost of photography, its a lot cheaper than a Harley or a boat or a classic car or an RV or a mistress or any of a lot of other mid-life crisis toys.

A7 is the basic Full Frame Mirrorless version. I believe it was the first of its kind and has 24 mpix. The 'S' version is only 12 mpix but has a much higher ISO capability and is optimized for video. The 'R' versions are high resolution at 36 mpix for the original version. In each case the 'ii' is the second generation of the version and adds in-body stabilization plus extra features including a jump to 42 mpix for the A7Rii.

All versions are still 'current' models. Sony is known for a steady stream of new and upgraded products, the most recent being the A6500, the new e mount A9 and the alpha mount A99. The A7 series hasn't had an injection since 2015 so another round of upgrades may be due. Sony Rumours is reporting the imminent launch of a new full frame dedicated video camera and an RX model - nothing about an A7 series upgrade.

I would recommend the 'ii' versions over the original versions, but if you are going for new gear, your $2500 budget will only allow for the A7ii at $1700 with 27-70mm zoom. The A7ii is considered a very fine camera. The A7Rii is rated #1 on DxoMark. Despite the 42 mpx on the A7Rii vs the 24 mpx on the A7ii, the A7Rii has much better ISO / Noise performance due to its back illuminated sensor.

There is an upcoming black and white photo contest, and whether my entries are the same caliber as others, I am going to enter two of the attached photos. The contest is juried, and those that make the cut go on into the contest where the actual winner is determined. I entered my first contest in 1983, won first place, and have never entered one since. I think I'll try again. The minimum size must be 11x14 up to 30x40. These are sized in the 16x20 range.

I really like #3. I also really like #4, but I'm not sure it is material for a photo contest. I would like #2 except for the solorized look of the trees on the horizon.
