Yeah, a UV filter was almost standard on the film cameras...but I have seen many pro/con (mostly con) discussions here on their use with digital. I use a rubber hood on all my lenses that seem to absorb those annoying bumps that always seem to happen. I pocket my lens caps as soon as I remove them...don't like things swinging in the breeze off my camera. ;-)

I too received a new Canon t3i from my children last year for Christmas and I love it! I always have some kind of filter on my lens, to protect it or to take a better picture. Some people argue against the use of filters but I guess I'm on the other side of the fence. Please do your research to make up your own mind and you'll get plenty of help here on UHH. And happy holidays!

Ah, those are the best kind of Christmas presents. As a matter of fact I'm shopping for a Sigma 10-20mm, for myself, isn't this fun?
One thought though, I like to take a new lens out and play with it to get a feeling for it before I use it in conditions like an important event like Christmas. Good luck and Merry Christmas!

I just recently got back into photography and was told when purchasing filters (ex. CPL UV ND), that the amount of money you pay is the quality and performance you get from your filter. In other words the more you pay, the better the better the filter.
I need feedback on what's the better filter to invest my money in and which ones should I stay away from....
Thanks!

I have to be honest. I completely disagree Larry.

I think you have to be careful who you listen to. Follow threads, and watch what someone posts before listening to advice. Make sure the person has the technical chops, and can produce a great photograph before eating up every word he/she says.

I am never completely happy with anything I shoot. Even the few shots I have in my archives that are pretty good, I know what their flaws are.

If you are happy with everything you do, how do you improve? Without self critique how do you gain new skills?

I have to agree with Nightski, I'm my worse critic too. I feel that if I wasn't, I wouldn't be able to strive to be better and better with my camera, and to me that's the fun part of photography.
As for advice, I love to read everyone's opinions and decide for myself if I want to or not want to try the advice. I've found one of the popular subjects to be whether or not to use a UV filter and the pros and cons of using one.

Thank you everyone for all your great tips and ideas, they're all very helpful. Now I'll take all this information and I'll use it to aid myself in my research for the proper software that will work for me.

I'm the type of photographer that tries to get everything correct when I compose the shot, leaving as little as possible that has to be done in post-processing.

Again thanks for everyone's help!
