I posted something here yesterday but it seems to have been deleted or at least I can't find it so forgive me if I re-post.

I had visited the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angles with some friends and we were hurrying away trying to find some lunch. About one or two blocks from the Hall I turned and quite literally pointed and shot this picture hand holding my Panasonic ZT7 with its full X12 zoom. Without realising it, the mode dial had slipped to "Clipboard" and so the photo is only 1200 X 1600 instead of then usual 3648 X 2736 and in spite of that, a surprisingly acceptable quality and it's a somewhat different view of the building than one usually gets.

I have manipulated the photo a little to remove the large poster of Gustavo Dudamel on the right that gave it a slightly surreal look but apart from that the photo is untouched. I like the way that the men are reflected in thre metallic surface of the building.

Your comments?

I literally snapped this very rapidy having visited the Walt Disney Concert Hall, it was quite literally a "point and shoot". I was some distance away, about two blocks, and hand held the full X12 zoom of my Panasonic TZ7. Unfortunately what I didn't realise was that the mode dial had moved to "Clipboard" and so the image is only 1200 X 1600 instead of the usual 3648 X 2736 and in spite of that, a surprisingly acceptable quality. I think that it makes an effective photo and I like the way that one of the men is reflected in the metallic surface of the building. I manipulated the photo a little to eliminate the large poster on the right of Gustavo Dudamel that give the shot an almost surreal look.

With my scanner it is not necessary to de-mount the slides. I have given an example of one slide I converted. Is that not sharp enough?

I use a Canon Canonscan 9000F and you can see a review here:

I'm attaching an example of a slide converted to digital. The original photo was taken in 1965 with a Yashica camera that I no longer have..

I think that you'll find that the Canon Powershot SX1 1S does just that. Here's a couple of reviews:

some of my award winning photographs are from a point and shoot camera. Pixoto.com top 20%, top 5%, these are very high numbers on pixoto.com. I have no complaints on a digital point and shoot camera!

Sometimes I choose to take my p+s with me instead of my DSLR, it's lighter and I have a lot less stuff to carry! I hold a secret though using a p+s camera for DSLR quality photographs!

So what camera do you use and may we see some examples of what you have taken?

I've just received today a new Canon Powershot SX1 1S so now I have to set it up and experiment with it.

Never underestimate what you can get out of a point and shoot compact camera. I have some great photos from my point and shoot that people rave about all the time and can't believe they were taken with a simple point and shoot. My husband ownes his own courier service and I'm on the road all the time and can't justify carrying my big DSLR with me all the time but I frequently use my point and shot when on the road so I don't miss those awesome shots I come across and would otherwise complain "Oh, if only I had a camera!!!" Now I am always ready for those unexpected shots. I love my point and shoot.

You're preaching to the already converted but thanks for your feedback anyway.

Just on the subject of zoom lenses, the two apparently very dull photos that I'm attaching were both taken from the same vantage point using my Panasonic TZ7. What is perhaps extraordinary about them is that the second one was taken using the full zoom when I was just hand holding the camera, no tripod. It seems I have a very steady hand!

To what limitation were they referring? These are sharp, good color, nice composition. Simply flowers.

I belong to a couple of forums specifically for 4/3 and other compact cameras. If you are interested, I will provide the links.[/quote]

I really have no idea. As I said in a previous message, I think that it was a snide remark (probably out of jealousy). I was particularly pleased with the Dragon Begonia photo and as I said, it's even better if it's enlarged. I actually put it up on my 42" LED TV and it looked stunning. The translucent quality of the petals is particularly lovely and they almost seem to have a "silvery" texture..

Yes, do post the links if it's allowed.

Really nice photos Rocky but you should really say which camera you were using at the time.

I too would have reservations about "better" but am of the opinion that compacts at times are capable of producing really stunning images.

I'm not sure whether my Olympus 5050 counts as a compact camera but the two orchid photos that I'm attaching were taken with that.

I also agree with you. the soft pink of the petals, and soft lighting gives this photo a calming relaxing feeling, totaly unlike the feeling you get by drinking a pangalactic gargleblaster, being thrown into the total perspective vortex, or being forced to listen to vogon poetry. rember in the words of the hitchhikers guide to the galaxy "don't panic" :!:

Lovely shots Bobmielke.

I will soon be moving on to a Canon Powershot SX1 1S that has had a lot of rave reviews and is the bridge between a compact camera and a full blown SLR. Can't wait to see the results I can get from it.

Here's another "straight" shot of the Anish Kapoor piece so you'll see what I mean about it being difficult to photograp
