I have harvested hundreds of white tail deer. Never noticed a Gamey test in any of my deer. Four per year for the last 45 years.

In my opinion Gamey taste comes from what happens after the deer is killed. Steps to prevent Gamey taste.

1. Do not worry about antlers. They do not eat very well.

2. Gut the deer as soon as possible. In cold weather you can wait 30 minutes. I will generally wait that long just in case another Deer comes to check on things after the shot. I gut the deer where shot and place the entrails s short distance away. I have never had the guts ruin a hunt the next day. Generally you cannot find them by the next day.

3. Skin the deer within a few hours. The sooner the better. I well get back in the stand to give the other hunters a chance. After hunting is over the deer goes to camp and gets skinned right away.

4. Bone out the caucus and put on ICE. The colder the better.

4. Process the meat your self. That way it is not mixed with other hunters meat that was transport on the hood of the truck with the guts still in and or the skin on. That is where Gamey taste comes from.
