Buck;
I tried to keep my suggestion simple. He seems to be a little bit unfamiliar with back up drives. So I did not want to make it sound confusing that's why I suggested just going to Best Buy and get basic external USB drive or two. Can't go wrong since he is in a limited space situation already. As I said to him, right now, today, this will free up his local drive while he explores expanded options. Your replies to people always make good sense that's why I replied to you and him I hope, if he reads this.
These drives are all MAC compatible. And affordable too.
Not sure what his file(s) sizes are but but being an older MAC, I am assuming he has the stock drive so I would think wayyyyyyyyy under terabyte range.
I even have some old sata full size external hard drives and they are still running. I have both Western Digital and Seagates too in the newer small sizes and they run great.
He has some simple solutions to his local drive space issue.
I hope we can help him out.
later gater.

Shit happens dude.
Look at like this Ok:
you lost only one camera, it's replaceable.
You missed one train, flooded room can be fixed.
Look, you obviously woke up today and wrote this post. So, you have your life and your health. You hopefully have your limbs and your eyes. You have clarity of mind.
You have blessings many many people would love to have.
Today is a new day and yesterday is just that.
Be thankful for what you have. I am not patronizing you.
I retired this year from health care, I worked in the hospitals and clinics for over 30 years and believe me, if you saw what I saw 5 days a week you would understand why I say this to you.
Tough times make us tough and teach us to appreciate what we have not lost.
I do hope you get your camera back, I think you will, it may take a little work, but I hope this week is better.
Sincerely
bruce

Thank you so much Dave.
I read most of the threads this morning and it just was so self grandstanding, this is the best I could describe.
People on this site will just nick pick the shit out of any issue regardless of how just simple it answered.
I replied because I too am retired and drawing my teachers retirement pension.
I am very familiar with these back up procedures so I felt like I should chime.
This site can really stupid on certain topics so I am very careful how and who I reply to.
You will be Ok on this. Even if you use a flash drive, just back and save your stuff off the local computer.
Keep in mind that on ANY device, it is not if but when, it fail fail.
I Thank you for your reply to me, that warmed my heart.
You will be Ok, God bless brother.

You are right. That is what I was trying to impress upon him. Even if it is a flash drive.
My God, the threads on this is crazy over something so simple. It is like a monkey shit fight between some.
Yes, he just needs to copy his stuff off the local puter. And yes, many people do not so this.
It will eventually bite them in the ass real hard.

Dave;
in your area there is a Best Buy, and some other computer type stores.
Right now; Today; Just go to Best Buy and get you an external hard drive.
Seagate, Western Digital, should be just fine.
They work well with MAC's.
I have several myself. Never had one fail on me.

NEVER NEVER keep anything on the local computer that you do not have saved on an external drive. You do not have to keep the external drive connected and running unless you need to re-save. It is Ok to keep stuff on the local computer to work with but after the work, re-save it to the external.
PLEASE do not let this get confusing and over complicated.
Just get you an external drive and save your stuff off the local computers drive. This will secure it.
This will ensure some security while you research all the other options and opinions which have been offered here.
These drives are not expensive. Since you stated you have a older iMac, you may not need more than just a 1TB-2TB drive. If so, get two for comfort.
Get you stuff saved off the local computer and then free up the local computers storage space by just deleting from the local drive.
You should be just fine. Let me know if I can help you.
Bruce.

You make a good point. Again I say, google it, there should be warnings and info about this. I sure would not try a it even if I could and I could pull it off but I would not do it.
If you really want a MAC, just buy one.

I stand educated. Apparently things have changed for the better as far as doing this. I still suggest googling it because there is a lot of instructions on this. From what I recall. Compare the cost of the hardware and your time to do this.

Been there, done that.
Unless you are a techie kinda guy, and you have an existing computer you use while 'toying around' with this project. Go for it.
But ! ; from my experience ; just buy the real damn thing. You can get good guys on used MACs with guarantees. All over the place.
Look up MAC of all trades.
By the time you buy ALL the hardware you need to make a 'compatible' IOS, then you will have to find someway or someone who has an IOS device and download the OS on a flash and then you 'try' to load on your box, the party begins. Driver issues out the ass.
Yes, it is possible and many have done it.
I really believe you need to google this instead of asking here.
You will find that by the time you buy all the compatible hardware to make this happen, you will only save a couple of hundred bucks. Seriously.
Then finding the OS, Loading it and then the issues begin.
If you have a lot of time on your hands; and you will need it too brother; then this is a do-able thing, but not easy.
If you REALLY want a MAC, just buy a used one OK.
IF ! and I mean IF, you just want a hobby project, then this is how yo need to look at it.
It can be done.
But your time is the issue.
Google it. Lot's of good videos on how to do these. I wish you the best on this.
By all means, if you do this, let me know how it goes.
Good luck dude.

I hear ya brutha.
I am a recently retired IT guy so I have the iPad Pro, laptop, tablets, desktops, etc. etc. All I need now is the Psychic direct-to-brain connection for all my emails and even magazines.
But ! regardless of how the world evolves, I STILL like to read printed magazines and will continue to do so until they are no more. Luckily Barnes and Noble's are all over this area and I love to pick up magazines of my interests while still printed, and yes, there are still paper mag's on the racks.
When electricity and internet are not available I still have something to read. To me, nothing is better than holding a paper mag in my hand.
Thanks for the post,
bruce.

A question like this will result in a lot of opinions and some pretty good advice the best thing to do is go to Camera store or somewhere where you can actually put your hands on them, try them out see what feels best to you and what your most comfortable with in your hand.
