My slide rule is a Post Versalog (LogLog Deci-trig), which got me through engineering school before the advent of all the hand held calculators. Taught me the value of significant figures. So I agree we should be skillful enough to be able to use our cameras manually.

I have no issues with automation, but I like to know how to bend it to my will. For me the situation is simple, I like to retain the option of being able to exercise control if I wish to. For me, that means the devices needs to be sufficiently controllable, and I need to know how to do things without automation if needed.
I can still take pictues with my Zenit E if I wish, and develop and print also.
Google doesn't make people stupid, but it can make people lazy. I believe we still need to develop basic skills, manual or automated. We need to understand how and why things work regardless of the sophistication of the tools we use.
