There's a camera I've got my eye on - kinda sorta - the Panasonic Lumix LX100. On of the few big complaints I've read about what otherwise sounds like a great compact P&S is the problem of lens flair.

Apparently, any shots anywhere near direct sun will create spectacular lens flair and halos.

I was just wondering if maybe a mild ND filter would counter this if you needed to shoot in the general direction of the sun with a camera that has bad lens flair?

The wider the angle, the less effective any hood will be. And the more elements a lens has, the greater the chance of flare when shooting into the light. I doubt the LX100 is any more susceptible to flare than any other camera of similar design.

I am going to purchase a used Tamron Di II 17-50mm f2.8 from a private person for $240.00. I was going to take my camera and try lens on my camera. If there is an imperfection on the lens will it show up on the camera viewfinder or should I take my computer and download the pictures. What else should I look at? TIA

Far better to take some test shots and examine them on a monitor, than try to make a determination based on the viewfinder image. It is sometimes incredible how some visible imperfections never show up in an image. Exterior scratches & dings, or lack of, indicates how the lens has been handled. Also check the aperture operation. Some independent lenses do not have the best build quality, and the aperture mechanism always takes a beating, especially if the lens has been used a lot in burst mode.

I have been using my 750 for 3-4 weeks taking lots of photos and learning new set up capabilities and suddenly i am not able to see any info in my view finder, not iso, metering, focus conformation. i called Nikon support reset the camera and I have to send the camera back to Nikon. Has anyone else had this experience ? Should I buy the p900 and stay with my 7000

Had the same problem with my Df. Then I charged the battery.

I've left VR on a couple of times when on the tripod, and as far as I know there is no warrant for my arrest (yet).

Can anyone help me setting the d7000 to properly auto focus. I acquired the Tamron 150-600 for eagles & birds and the setup will not focus nor track no matter what setup I have picked. If the object is not in the single center point then there is no focus. Try to track moving ducks and birds in flight is pushing me to tank Nikon and switch to Canon. The camera lens combo seem to focus okay if the subject is 50 feet or closer any thing beyond that why bother. I was told to auto fine tune the lens this did nothing now I'm being told Tamron will need the lens & camera to sync them. Has anyone with this combo had focus issues ... Also I need to have someone explain to me how to make the entire focus area of d7000 operational.

This is driving me nuts and I'm seeing some outstanding work by many super photographers.

Thank you.

Before condemning the camera or lens, first check Page 91 in your manual ("Focus Point" or "AF-Area Mode" in the Index) to select your focus points. I use 9-point dynamic-area AF, you might want to start with 21-point. If there are trees or other objects in the background, selecting all focus points could cause focus problems.
Photographing birds on the wing is a challenge - pros miss more than they hit - and takes a lot of practice and even more patience. Once you get your tracking technique down pat, then check for AF fine-tuning. You may in fact need to send it in if unsuccessful doing it yourself. Good luck.

It seems to arise every now and then, the question on how to mount a Canon lens to a Nikon camera. The only converter I know of was a Bower that is now almost impossible to find. But there is a new kid in town, Foto Diox just announced to have a new adapter that does just that!!

It's known as degeneration.

Do any of the 'old' cameras work, or can they be gone over & made to work? If so, then I disapprove of this project. It might be some Germanic gene, but I cringe when a camera that can be used for it's original purpose is drilled, glued, etc., for another use, in a nonreversible way. Sorry. Tell me it ain't so.

While the term "good use" is certainly open to interpretation, there is no law saying everyone has to employ their hours of boredom in a constructive manner.

Yes, I know I can set white balance in post when shooting RAW. But I wanted to see what the camera could do. So I did a little test.

I shot a grey card and recorded the WB setting. Then I shot a white card, same light, and recorded the WB setting.

Next I took three JPEG shots, one each with the pre-recorded WB settings and one using the camera’s auto WB setting.

The light was soft, after sundown, early evening light. The camera picture control was set to Vivid.

The colors in the shot take with the Camera's Auto WB setting looked like the colors that I saw when I shot it. The shots with the pre-recorded WB have a very warm cast. Is better, some will say yes, some now, but regardless that was not how the scene looked to me. Maybe my eyes need calibration?

Shots are posted below.

The results are about what one would expect. Late evening and early morning sunlight is warmer than at midday. I suspect No. 2 is what your eyes saw, No. 1 is what your brain told you your eyes saw. The grey card reading would seem to be more accurate.

I would like to use my DSLRs (they're various Canon models, in case that matters) to make digital versions of my old slides. I have the Canon 50mm f/2.5 Macro with the 1:1 adapter and various macro rails.

What I can't find is something to hold the slide with a diffuser (and maybe a light source) behind it up in front of the lens.

I have one of those T-mount slide copier gizmos (inherited) with the built-in lens, which is pretty crappy, optically. One of its other problems is that its diffuser is too close behind the slide. Otherwise, I'd just remove that whole assembly from its 'optical tube' and figure out some way to mount it in front of the lens.

Does anyone make a slide holder of decent quality like that any more?

For removal, the screw under the base should be loosened, but it sounds as if the pan tension screw may be stripped.

I have a fairly new Manfrotto 055 Magnesium ballhead that won't lock into place. The pan keeps spinning. When I try to turn it clockwise, it won't tighten. When I turn it counterclockwise, it won't come off.
Does anyone know what's wrong?

Have you tightened the pan knob?

( The P900 does not shoot raw ) Lietz yes I was aware of that in the lead up to buying one, I will have to make the best of what the camera offers as is.From what I have seen of sample Jpegs it is going to be a big improvement on the Panasonic Fz72 that I had.

My comment was in regards to the recommendation you got to shoot RAW.

Hi there I am a newcomer to photography so please excuse my very evident ignorance. I have a question regarding intelligent Auto or Auto. What can I expect in terms of image quality in the use of this function particularly in the photography of birds? I am about to purchase the new Nikon p900 and would like some advise as I have not yet to learnt how to manually set a camera.

It's not uncommon to get uninformed advice, but you'll learn quickly which to ignore. (The P900 does not shoot RAW.)
