He could be playing peek-a-boo or hide and seek. At any rate he looks pretty secure in that old tree trunk. :-)

Thank you Annie

Amazing. I had to download and double click to be sure I saw him. However did you spot him? Never mind - I'm just glad you spotted him and shot him.

Thanks for taking a look MadMike, my son lives a little north of you by Elmwood Park. This is a spot in Pueblo State park that the park ranger's will have to yellow tape off the area to give the owl's some space.

Did you already know it lived there in the first place or were you just lucky to spot it?

Thank you for taking a look Jana. Yes I knew there was a possibility they could be back for another year. Until I downloaded the results I was not sure.

Could you show us that set-up with a picture and how well does this shot balance. Will this also work with a shorter lens. The reason I ask is because I'm having a problem making this work with my gimbal with short lenses. Thanks

Here is the 80-400mm with foot. The arca-standard QR plate mounts to the foot on the lens as shown. I have the gimbal head loose on both adjustments and the lens set to 400mm, where I usually use it, balance is good. Even if I change to a shorter focal length I do lock the the two gimbal adjusters before I take a shot. Your problem with the short lenses ? If you are using a arca plate all I can think of is to check to make sure the plate is not mounted upside down.

How do you shoot a vertical orientation ??

change to portrait and allow for crop if necessary. I do have a 80-400mm with the foot mount on the lens, so I can adjust that lens to the vertical.

If you read the various posts, more than one person said the gimbal really only works with lenses that have collars. I have no experience with a gimbal so I really don't know.

A picture is worth a thousand words ?

Arc-standard QR plate mounted to bottom of camera. Then mounted to nest gimbal head. Works great.

Thanks for the input. It is a confusing subject for sure. I think I will probably get a regular head first and then look for a gimbal head later if I still feel the need. I play around with still life and close ups using smaller lenses which wouldn't work with the gimbal. I may contact Carter-I ordered the UHH pins from him-since I see a lot of good comments from people who got tripods and heads from him.

I am not quite understanding why 'smaller lens won't work with a gimbal. I use a 24mm on a D800E with a nest gimbal for milky way shots, works great. I liked the nest gimbal it's so easy to use I brought another. One is on a manfrotto 055/pro and the other on a nest 404. Nest gimbal for $298 at camera cottage, great price.

Nice photo Greymule. Reminds me of a old saying - 'Leave only footprints'. Hope your recovery is going well.

Thanks for taking a look Ron. If you go in the summer, go during the week not as busy.
