Oh Peter how can I shoot portraits like this? I love it! Took my breath away. It's amazing. I have a Nikon D5100 with the standard 18-55 kit lens. Any tips? My ears are wide open.....

I suppose I could do a real know it all thing and tell you lots of stuff but the reality is that I am terrified of portraits and people pics. I normally avoid them. But I decided that it was a challenge I needed to take on. The only advice I can give is pick faces that have personality, the world of pretty faces and airbrushing is of no interest to me I much prefer a real person. Unless you are doing candid street shots go and talk to people and ask them if its ok to take a pic. But then spend your time talking and get to know them. And the pic I like is when they are relaxed and they look you in the eye. I have attached a couple more (and yes the first guy really did have a face as red as the pic) The second guy was a keyboard player in a blues band that was just jamming down at a little country pub. I PP using Topaz adjust to get the rustic look for the second guy. If its technique you are interested in I am happy to go through the steps using Topaz but it will be the case of a learner trying to teach a learner.

But maybe thats the way it should be.

Thanks for the feedback. I think her beauty shines through regardless. I'm not so fond of her tattoos either actually. However, they are in honor of her late brother & father. So, I guess to her they mean a lot. However, I feel that they will restrict her for the rest of her life from certain opportunities for sure!

oh my. So confused. Found a few reasonable 50mm & 18-55mm. Which one is better for quality portrait photography?

Also, here is my facebook photography page. Check out my albums & tell me what ya'll think? http://www.facebook.com/KahiauPhotography

craigslist has a 24mm f2.8 for $100 & a 50mm f1.4 for $75.

Is it smart to buy used. Can they wear out to where they're not good anymore?

I love it when someone does something different, so I have to agree that #4 is brilliant. I know a lot of you don't like black and white mix so I wonder if this helps to focus ( no pun intended ) on what sex the baby is.
What's your thought!

very cool. Thanks!

She posted a few pics on Facebook & everybody loved them. They thought their expressions were priceless. Loved how proud daddy was to find out he got his boy......

I think that you did a great job of capturing the moment and your photos are excellent. They do nee a little post processing but most photos do. Here is one that I worked on a little. My question is, who put the balloons in the box?

The doctor wrote the sex down on a piece of paper, then folded it up. The expectant mother's sister opened the note, bought the balloons, & put them in the box.
