Yes. I've had to fix a few tilted images also. Problem is that it always costs some sharpness to rotate an image, even just a little bit.

I haven't seen such a loss. Have over a 1,000 pics from last Fall in Germany, France, & Austria to PP and will have to look more sharply for that.

Larry is correct & I should have mentioned it. It is a surprisingly common mistake. See:

I also have had very disappointing results shooting painting. Not only the color and distortion, but often (usually?) I get reflected light on the painting. Additionally, you also need to be aware of getting in other people's way and of them getting in you way. Frankly, its stressful. The Palace of Versailles was AWFUL.

Chuck,
Some quick thoughts:
1- Yes, for us right-handed folk, it is natural to tilt to the right. Even though I'm aware of it, When I take a picture and am in a hurry... You get the picture. ;-}
2- This next point will not be that useful. Try to study your camera w/a monopod, tripod, or some stationary object. You say you're going on a river trip, love those, but having been there these are not usually available. Thus, as we're often hurried and concerned RE other aspects of our art, making the picture perfectly vertical/horizontal is the last item that I'm concerned about as it is very easy to correct in PP. Of course now I have over 1,000 pictures to PP.
3- You can look to the bottom of the frame and try to get the picture level w/that reference. Mo bettah da kine (used to live in Hawaii), is to have your camera to display a vertical and horizontal grid on your viewing screen. The grid is much easier to use than the frame' bottom. I use a thirds grid as that also helps in composition. However, for me, the grid's primary use is to get the correct alignment.

My only point was cellphones rely on a lot of processing to overcome the analog shortcoming of the optics.[/quote]

The extent of the processing within a cell phone is beyond my knowledge, although I am considered to be a techie. Considering the power required by PCs/Macs, I wonder just how sophisticated/extensive it could be. Again consider my friend's picture. If the RAW file were not exceptional, I question the ability of the cell phones s/w to produce such an exceptionally sharp and clear picture.

But since I've already admitted to a lack of expertise in this area, let's agree that the picture was mainly created within the camera. Given that, I am qualified to posit we will soon see that capability to be incorporated into future high-end Cannons, Nikons, etc.

Am I correct your point is that is not desirable?

I'll say the same thing differently: The objective of taking pictures is to create one that is as pleasing/beautiful as possible. My friend's picture demonstrates we can achieve that objective using a cell phone. It is not relevant to me if the camera has s/w that enhances that final picture. My Cannon applies preset modifications to the RAW file when I have it produce a JPEG. When I shoot RAW, I make subsequent modifications using my PC. I used to make those modifications in the darkroom.
Can't be any plainer than that.

I'm sorry you missed the last sentence: "My point is: It is the finished picture we get that counts, and what she has is beautiful."

Based on the physical limitations of analog optics...

Three things for me here:
1-We shouldn't post another person's work, but in RE to your comment... I just gotta.
2-My camera is a Cannon bridge SX-50, and I would really like a faster lens. And in that regard, you are absolutely correct that there is a built in limitation to "analog optics".
3-The woman who took this picture was using a smart phone and the next day asked me if I thought that smart phones would ever reach the level of my camera. (Just ignore the 'level' of my camera.) I responded she should just consider the picture she had just taken the previous evening. Note, this was a dark night and a hand held cell phone camera.
Here it is, SOOC, not even straightened. Click the download and note how sharp the image is.
My point is: It is the finished picture we get that counts, and what she has is beautiful.
