I am wondering if anyone can explain what happened with my photos of the 2024 eclipse. Here's the setup.

I was near the center of the path of totality. There were a few high, very thin clouds, but the view was pretty much clear and unobstructed for the entire time.

These pictures were taken with a Nikon D5500 with Nikon 18-55mm zoon, set to 55mm.
Focus set to infinity.
Solar filter was installed.
Exposure was manual (I think F8, 1/30 sec, ISO 800).
Pix taken every 1 minute via remote shutter release.

I also had a Nikon D5100 with a Sigma 600mm reflector lens. Same exposure settings. Solar filter installed. Pix taken every 1 minute using an intervalometer.

The D5100/600mm took decent (although overexposed!) photos. You can plainly see the eclipse progression from beginning to end of the partial.

The D5500 only took pictures of a round image - no eclipse change noted, other than position. Just a round dot.
I know that the setup should have worked because I could see a difference when I moved my hand in front of the lens (using LiveView).

I've also checked the D5500 since then to see if there was any kind of damage to the sensor - everything looks fine.

I would like to understand what happened to cause every image to be the same dot.

I agree with the comments you have received. I live in North Texas DFW area so I was right in the middle of the totality path and shot around 200 images, half RAW and half JPEG. Used two cameras, Nikon D300S and bridge Panasonic FZ300. I made my own filters with a sheet of solar filter from an astronomy store. I am not skilled at this and did little prepping except a few sun shots to test the filters and such. I set both cameras to Auto mode, auto ISO, Spot metering. Most came out very nice except when I powered off/on and refocused. Used a 80-400mm Nikon lens on D300, and the Lumix zooks out to 600mm. Both were close to or full zoom. Same set up for the annular eclipse we had this last summer. I had camera on tripods but they are not high quality and basically I held steady as possible with my hands. Again, after reading all the information about how to do this and that I said what tha heck. Just do what works for me. I may post some images, have been asked to not sure yet.
Well that's my two cents of cheap-ass photoing the eclipses. I hope you get another chance.
Bruce.

Speaking of great American women who were iconic, liberated and far beyond their time, Margret Bourk-White. From what I have read about Bourk-White she had more impact on the moral and winning of the war by American men during the war in Europe. Hats off to Bourk-White!

Ok Tim, another big ole Texas thank ya for bring up M-White, I just read up on her and what an amazing life and story of her. She was a brave and pioneer spirited lady.
Thanks again Tim.

She was a very lovely woman. Thank you for remembering her and posting this.

Over the years, working with one client has given me several fringe benefits. The first came when I shared the opportunity to photograph the cats. Today, as I pulled into the drive, I saw that the mom had gone into full gardening mode and had plants sitting in their pots ready to be planted. This mom goes all out in everything she does! You should see her place at Christmas. Nothing goes undecorated, not even her animals. So I was excited to see she was going to garden again.

So, I decided to get a jump start and took a few shots. Can't wait to see the garden in full bloom!

This is a relatively new subject for me, so you flower perfectionists, I ask that you remember when you first started

I hope you enjoy my attempts!

I am trying to explore my options for flowers, so I tried Home Depot. It was a very sunny day with some wind. I went inside, and it was slightly better, but sometimes they were crammed together!

I wasn't satisfied with the last flower post, so I thought I would try again! I went to two other places, so all I can do is keep practicing!

I hope you enjoy this journey and process! Still, see soft focus sometimes!

Being a work in progress isn't always fun!

Feedback is welcomed!

Read this whole article about Vincent Dransfield who lives in Little Falls, New Jersey. What a story. To look at him and listen to what his life is like at 110 years. I wanted to post this last night, but I just could not decided what to post it with the correct words. If you read this man's post you will understand. I wish I could meet this Gentleman one time and listen and talk to him for just one day.

It’s not just Jews who have to worry about attacks. The headlines have been full of reports of individuals committing acts of violence against blacks, Hispanics, Asians, and many times just people in general. A common theme is the person committing these acts have been bullied or have very low self esteem. Most know they will probably die when law enforcement arrives but they know the media will make every effort to identify them and research their entire life. Thus they become, in a sick way, famous and no longer the losers they were before. I attend a very small Methodist church in a rural area. I am licensed for concealed carry and have been bringing a firearm to our services just in case. These are sad times.

Absolutely correct George. I used voice recognition in my iPad this morning so I kept it short. But yes, all churches have been threatened, Catholics as of lately too. It is a sad situation. I was just reading about the trans kid who was planning a school shooting to get famous !!!! I am so sad our kids, culture, society, has depraved to such an evil low. How do these kids get this way ??????
Basically, nobody is safe.
Last year the big Messianic synagogue in Dallas received a threat and the FBI traced it from Pennsylvania !!!!
God help us as we pray.

I have an especially important video to share with you this week. Please take a moment to watch.

Does Your Church Need Armed Guards?

Thanks so much for looking!

An important message, sir. Sadly, they do need armed guards and security.
I attend a Jewish messianic Congregation and we’ve heard threats and we do have security.

Very lovely images. Nice memories. My first DSLR was a D 200 and I broke it three years ago and I sure miss it. It was a damn good camera and took excellent images.

Yes, it is a House Finch, very common house finch or house sparrow. They are everywhere here.

Ha. When I was a kid, my large, tri-colored Collie caught a full grown Robin and was carrying it around the yard in his mouth. When I saw him, I told him to drop it, which surprisingly he complied. The Robin stumbled around a few steps then took off w/o a problem. That was about 65-70 years ago and I still remember it vividly.

Cats aren't as gentle with birds, and hopefully, thanks to our UHH friend here, he'll have a happy landing.

Thank you BDaddy, yes it is nice when we as humans can step in and help. Thank you for sharing this lovely memory with us.

Quick interview, Birdie's opinion of cats is in the language you can't use in public range now.

Hahahahaha Robert, well I think the birdie is not a cat over. Yea bird language would be interesting to know but the little baby was in shock being in the mouth of a cat then a giant human looking at it.
