I have been wanting to move to mirrorless. I need to be able to photograph animals in low light, so also considering getting Nikkor 70-200 2.8. I have been using Canon 7D Mark II for years, with L lenses, and to me, it has been OK but not great. But I have zero experience with Nikon of any sort. A bit concerned about weight, too, as that lens weighs quite a bit.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Especially those of you that actually own a Nikon Z8....

Been using Nikon since the D1. Own the Z8, Z9 and the 70-200 2.8 S lens. The major difference for me is the battery life even with the MB-N12 battery pack. I get around 400 shots on the Z8 and over 2800 on the Z9 with a single battery charge. Why do I own both the Z8 and the Z9 is because the Z8 is lighter and has a smaller footprint. Getting old and on occasion not being able to use a tripod, out comes the Z8. Shoot a lot of High School sports and lighting is poor but I see very little difference between the Z8 and the Z9 and with post processing I am happy with the results. I haven't done a comparison shot between the two cameras.

Thanks. I do lots of wildlife, and I was wondering about Steve Perry.

I own both books, Tom Hogan and Steve Perry. Goto Steve Perry website https://backcountrygallery.com/
It will give you feel for his book. I enjoy both books the explanation are very good with detail.

I know that I will be getting good advice from my UHH colleagues. I was tasked by my daughter with to recommend a large format printer to buy. She wants a printer with 17" minimum width. She's leaning towards a Canon but I've heard good things from Epson printers.
Although her photo taking abilities, eye and creativity, have long surpassed my own, she still depends on dad for equipment advice and in this case I am delegating this on you. Her camera is a Fuji GFX50R.
Looking forward to your input

Years ago I had an Epson large format printer and traded it in for Canon iPF-8100 from that point I have only bought Canon inkjet printers. Owned PRO-1, PRO-10 and now own 2 PRO-1000s. Canon tech support is very good. Sold the iPF-8100 and bought a iPF-8400. I have had only 1 problem with a printers print head and they replaced it and that was on the iPF-8400. Bought the first PRO-1000 when it first came out, bought the second one to use at work. If you can afford it I would recommend the PRO-1000 but it does not support roll paper. If you shoot panos you are limited to 25 inches in lenght I think. I do profile the printers. And with the 12 colors I get fantastic results. The only downside is it uses ink when you turn it on. When you first turn it on it uses a lot of ink to fill the plumbing. The pano is off the iPF-8400 the rest are off the PRO-1000.

I'm still curating the photos I took a week ago, and am learning ON1 Photo RAW 2024 at the same time. I think this is the premiere photo of the bunch, although I may still tweak it a bit. Those AI settings are impressive, but don't always yield the results I desire. Still, this is one place that begs to be photographed!

You have that right "this is one place that begs to be photographed!". I was there in June and can't wait to go back.

The NEF output for most of my images from the D850 is at least 50meg
The NEF outuput for most of my images from the D5 is around 25meg.

If the D5 is a better camera and far more expensive than the D850, why is the NEF output resolution apparently so much higher on the D850 than it is on the D5? Is there a major difference in the pixel size? Thank you.

I have owned both the D850 and D5. The D5 was for sports and action and the D850 was for everything else. For me it was the number of fps vs detail. When Nikon introduced the D6 I was hoping it would be the combination of the D850 and the D5, it wasn't. The Z9 is plus more. I would shoot about 300 frames at a football game, last friday night I shot over 3000 frames. But it is still amounts to LUCK. Standing at right place at the right time but with fps you can catch the runner looking like he's charging rather than marching.

I have to ask. What would you prefer in terms of our clocks? The current system, in my opinion, is absolutely ridiculous. Politicians are trying to decide when and if they should do something, but they don't know what to do. They seem to be leaning toward year-round DST.

This is not something that should be determined by public opinion. According to science and medical studies, permanent DST would be a bad idea. The best approach would be to live on "Normal Time." I don't think we'll be seeing that in my lifetime, though.

Opinions?

Here in Arizona we don't do daylight savings time any more. Back when we were doing daylight savings time I can remember going to the drive inn theater and the movie wouldn't start till about 9:30pm.

I own a Canon iPF-8400 and a Canon PRO-1000 printer. Their are hundreds of prints on that pool table and I enjoy viewing them, they bring back memories of where I have been and done. I am an extreme hobbyist. I have only sold one print in the last 50 years and that was the 2017 solar eclipse of which you can see on the pool table. A veterinary hospital has a fund called "My only Hope Fund" which I gave the money to. No I was not born into money I was the oldest of 11 children, I guess my parents didn't know what caused kids. I started a manufacturing business at the age of 26 and sold it 15 years later and retired. And this was without a college degree but I did 4 years in an apprentice program to pay my way thru high school. If you like I could try and print something large for you.

Panoramas can be fun (or frustrating) to create. You can "stitch" them together in many photo programs or take them on your phone. They can be created in the horizontal, vertical, spheroid or a variation thereof. Post your panoramas and if you can recall: number of panels, vertical or horizontal etc.

This is a repeat paragraph from an early post.
Been shooting panos for many years. I was getting very frustrated shooting with my Nikon D2X with a 14-24 2.8 ED lens. When printing I couldn't zoom in or blow up to a large picture and have the detail with it still being sharp. Then I got real lucky by meeting Guy who is a salesman at Tempe Camera in early 2000. He showed me how merge photos in Photoshop before Photomerge. My first big photo merge was of Bryce Canyon with a 70-200 lens and shot over 50 pics on a tripod. Shoot freehand now. I ended up with a 3' by 8' picture. You could zoom in and see the back packs on the hikers.

In this picture I zoomed (ZOOM 1 2 and 3) in so you could see the detail. I travel with friends and wonder off at times so I can take a pano with them in it.
You may ask why go to all the trouble, and my answer is you can always make it smaller but to make it larger with the detail I don't think so. AI maybe able to but then it's not your work. The above pano I shot in June of this year at Machupicchu Peru. Had to do a screen shot so the file would be small enough to upload. I print this 36"X96" and came out excellent. Had shoulder surgery last week and won't be taking pictures for a while.
There are some great panos posted here and am enjoying viewing them.

I have PS and LR and often struggle to get the file size down low enough to be accepted at UHH or sent through Gmail at their 20mb limit. My neighbor simply exports from Capture One and his file is 1.5 mb. I want to know how to do that ! ! !

No he is just a JA!

Shot a lot of panos but never had the feeling I wanted to go back like wanting to go back to Machu Pichu.
Again THANK YOU for your comment.
