Tom,

I can relate to what you’re dealing with. My kit is the R5. 100-400 II with and without the 1.4III. My long distance shots were soft. One day I took my range finder to get an idea how far out the eagles were. Oh my, easily 200 ft and farther plus they are in motion. Throw in heavy cropping and my shots were soft. Shots that are much closer are not an issue, as I get very sharp images.

Thanks for the quick reply. When I get back home, I’ll send you some photos and see where that leads to. Appreciate this very much.

I would be very interested in hooking up with you and chatting about your settings, (eye detection, AF points, etc)., in particular for farther away shots. I have the R5 with the Canon 100/400 L II. As Paul knows, I’ve been struggling with blurry photos. Canon suggested that I send in the camera and lens, which I have done. I’m away from my computer and files until Feb. 13. Thanks. Fran

I recently installed the 1.5 with no focusing issues, but I have been struggling with blurry photos. I am going to post a couple of photos with detailed information hoping to get some feedback.

I want to thank those who commented and provided feedback on my recent post “Elk in PA.” I believe this post was my third ever.

Thanks. Elk were native to PA but the settlers extirpated them. Elk were re-introduced in 1913 and are now thriving. They are a natural treasure of our state. Waiting for another snowfall, and I'll be back up there.

Interesting that you posted this today. I just uploaded two photos from a recent trip to the Benezette area in PA. Specifically, places where you want to visit are, the Elk Country Visitors Center, Woodring Farm Viewing Area, Hicks Run Viewing Area, and Winslow Hill. You will also find elk along Route 555. There are a number of crossings along this road. One other viewing area is directly behind the convenient/gas station in Benezette. Cross over the bridge and park along the road. Great place to view elk in the evening. Have fun.

Ironically, my last post was one year ago of Elk in Pennsylvania. At that time, there was 24" of snow on the ground (12/17/20). These photos were taken 11/9/21. I spent the better part of a day searching for some bulls and finally, on my last hike, I came over a ridge and there were 8 bulls working their way through a grassy area. It was an amazing sight.

UHH has been a great source of information for me, whether it’s technical, equipment, etc. I’ll admit, I don’t engage in conversation much, but I read and follow threads. There’s rarely a day goes by, I don’t carefully review the UHH posts. One example, Paul helped me figure out BBF. And there are many other examples as well.
