It is a four hour drive from Bryce Canyon to Moab. I live in Utah and would not try taking both of those in. There is some pretty desolate, but pretty, country between the two.

No Monument Valley no trip. It's off.

A few people have mentioned checking the status of parks. As of a few weeks ago the Navajo Reservation has been closed off (monument valley is a Navajo Tribal Park). I'm not sure how this affects travel along the Interstate, but you will not be able to get into Monument Valley. If you can you'd be better off postponing the trip until next summer when things are under better control.

No Monument Valley, no trip. I'll have to wait this out.

It is true that RVs are complex machines that can have as many things go wrong as all the stuff in your house combined. And we drive them down bumpy roads all the time.

But those that rent them keep them simpler ( e.g. no awnings or slides) and keep them in shape. If you rent one be sure to check it out before driving off. The two most important things are the water pump and refrigerator. They rarely fail but I’ve had one of each over the years. And the water pump didn’t actually fail: I didn’t know how to prime it at the start of the season ( usually not needed).

Frankly I’ve had far more issues with hotels over the years.

Check the water pump? Where do you find the water pump? If the fridge goes out and my beer is warm, who do I call for help? Does AAA cover this?

I should have been more clear. I was really talking about the need to be handy to deal with all the things that can and do go wrong with the hookups and appliances. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quz4WXeTIP4

18mpg? Here is an excerpt from Consumer Reports on the mpg of Tesla:
"One way to gauge EV efficiency is by looking at a metric called miles-per-gallon equivalent, or MPGe—an estimate of how much electricity will be needed to power the vehicle. It’s based on an Environmental Protection Agency formula that converts miles per kWh to MPGe. By this measure, Tesla’s Model 3 comes in at 130 MPGe"

I didn't go to Cal Tech. I'm more concerned with driving an RV under a low bridge and decapatating myself. Fuel efficiency is not on my short list.

Nonsense. But then I almost never go to a commercial RV park. Commercial parks have electricity, though, so no generators. And there are “over 50” ones for those interested (not me).

I love driving my RV. It is like going to the IMAX.

I also infrequently drive on Interstates so I’m king of the road where I go. I have to do mountain passes to go anywhere from where I live, and I usually tow a Jeep, but I have no issues.

Backing an RV is perfectly easy with care. ( Having said that my auto dealer dinged the back of mine when I had it in for oil change a couple weeks ago. Cost him $1,300 to fix it.)

Misplaced fear. I’ve been driving all kinds of RVs over 50 years and never had an issue on the road. Many hundreds of thousands of miles. There are tow services specifically for RVs.

The problem with electric is range. My RV is good for about 650 miles on a fillup and gas stations abound. It takes more planning with an EV and you are at best going to get 300 mi in a day. My son recently took his Tesla on a vacation trip. It took planning and they didn’t go very far. The electric fees worked out to 18 mpg.

You probably live on a farm and have a barn full of tools that I never heard of. I take my chances on the freeways in LA but what's dodging a few bullets compared to trying to fix an overflowing john. I'm staying home.

Unless you're a retired long haul semi truck driver or Greyhound bus driver, driving an RV is not easy especially when you have to back into a space. No personal experience but I've read that RV camps are noisy with generators, music, and children.

I'm not driving anything more complicated than a golf cart. We're staying home.

I'm 82 and my wife is 70. We have been in the habit of taking one trip abroad each year, occasionally, two trips. There is no lack of things to do with seven planting beds to keep weeded and watered, two acres to mow, and a lifetime of papers to scan and shred or file, but not being able to experience something different for the forseeable future by traveling safely is a real bummer. Also, I rarely get energized to take photos unless I'm in a foreign place (NYC counts as a foreign place). I thought of a long domestic driving trip, but I don't want to catch this virus. Contrary to Blair Shaw Jr.'s dismissal of death, I don't feel ready to die nor do I want to experience damaged organs from a "mild" infection.

Indi sprays the sheets in a hotel with sanitizer. I don't want to sleep on sprayed sheets; that just strikes me as ridiculous. A high quality RV with a toilet and shower is very expensive, both to buy and to rent. I don't feel capable of driving the equivalent of a small bus. Also, if one is not mechanically talented it's a mistake to get an RV because sh*t happens and the AAA is not going to help. I'm thinking that the yet to be produced Tesla Cybertruck equipped with the Go Anywhere Toilet might be the answer to touring the U.S. The prototype has an enclosed bed that can be heated or air conditioned with the truck's battery running its heat pump. So, sleep in the truck, crap and pee in the truck, cook your food on a camping stove or even a microwave plugged into the truck's 110 V outlet and keep clean with baby wipes.

Using public restrooms is dangerous. A closed atmosphere, toilets with no covers flushing and sending up virus particles, hot air hand dryers spreading germs. If you can find a motel or hotel that guarantees that no one has entered the room in the last 72 hours, good luck to you.

I am 78 and my girlfriend is 70. In July - August we went on a 7500 mile road trip from Las Vegas NV to Dallas, Nashville, Ft Meade MD, Philadelphia, Mt Rushmore, Devil's Tower, Cheyenne, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone and back to Las Vegas. We visited relatives along the way and stayed at nice hotels/motels along the way. No problems. A lot of tourists along the way. Lots of RV travelers. National Parks are crowded. Take masks and hand sanitizer. Big difference in their use along the way. Enjoy. Be careful but don't worry.

katu,

I, too, am 79 and extremely eager to get back out on the road again. That said, no, I would definitely not go. Like it or not, we are well into the "at risk" age group. It would not take much to cause permanent, if not fatal, damage for us to contract Covid-19. I just don't see the cost-benefit of such a trip at this time. You are going to be traveling in areas where people are most likely not observing the protocols that would protect you. The only conceivable way I could begin to justify such a trip would be in an RV that I pre-loaded with all I would need for the trip. If either one of you comes down with Covid-19, I can't imagine that, in retrospect, you would feel the trip was worth it. Just my 2 cents.

Don't wait, my wife and I did a Caravan Bus tour of the parks last year, I'm afraid I waited to long (76) I could not walk the trails I wanted. Had to see Monument Valley, G.C. so so, most enjoyed staying in park at Zion.
Google Earth allowed me to virtual walk the trails at Zion and Grand Canyon before the trip. Try them out to see what interests you.

The trip is going to have to wait. Closing of Monument Valley was the deal killer.
