I had the same problem with my 5D MkIV when I attached an EF-S lens. Make sure the lens isn't designed for a Canon crop sensor camera.

I had the same problem with my 5D Mark IV and I turned off digital lens optimizer and it worked.
A few eye shots for fun. The focus is a little off especially for the dragon fly in the fourth photo that landed on my leg. I was trying to get the photo before it flew away.

I took a photo of an eagle at the zoo behind a caged fence and tried my hands at macro using a speed light attached to the camera. I'm open to comments for improving my macro and shooting behind fences and cages.
It was a cutout at the zoo for kids to put their heads through the hole and take photos and the giraffe was through the opening. I wish it was looking at me for a better shot.
