A small but useful point not mentioned so far, the canon focus much closer (36") . I love mine, have the 1.4 mk111 , don't really use it that often. I bought then sold the Sigma 150 - 600, for me the canon 100-400 was/is hands down better. The 400 5.6 is lighter but not as versatile, I have and use one, but not very often.

Mud hens, marsh hens, rails, coots--the American coot. The only member of the rail family to live in flocks, they are on the eagles' menu--kind of like eagle's mud hen bars. Having played some amateur baseball, I'm all over the Toledo Mud Hens but I never knew that Mud Hen chicks were so ugly cute! I'll be on the lookout for them this spring. I find it fascinating that so many wildlife lovers, particularly birders with binoculars, take such an interest in a bird I pretty much maligned. This group/flock is usually in the tall marsh grass but I found them here on a grassy bank--right below two eagle lookout trees! I do find them graveling on occasion.

Personally I think they are a very maligned bird, so to showcase their delicate beauty I have attached two. Most golfers hate them for popping on the greens. Here, Redtail's love them, (easy pickens ) makes feeding the kids easier.

not so bad looking....

I am on my 3rd set of 4oz bottles from Precision with out any problems. I think a (cl42) cartridge holds 1/8 oz (just guessing) so 8 * 4= 32 refills per set. Precision change formulation between sets one and two, They refer to their new color line as "Signature" . They offer (and I wanted ) larger bottles but I worry about the ink growing old so 4 oz. for me. I do think (without testing) OEM ink ages better, less fading, but I spray with a protectant (as do most who value their prints) so who really knows. As often as I refill my cartridges, with no problems, speaks volumes for trouble free printing.

Do you know about or belong to "Backyard Birds of the Inland Empire" on Face Book? It is named for and inspired by a book of the same name about the birds of this region of California. The 1st edition is an expensive collectable but the second edition is available here:

Thank you for the link Robert. very interesting

Phainopepla — fay-no-PEP-la
picture taken through a less than clean window with morning sun (that's all my excuses for today). Their range (quote from Wikipedia)

"The phainopepla ranges as far north as central California with the San Joaquin Valley and southern Utah, and south to central Mexico, the interior Mexican Plateau region; the southern edge of the plateau, the transverse mountains is its non-breeding home. It is found in hot areas, including desert oases, and is readily seen in the deserts of Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California; also the Baja Peninsula, both Baja California-(north), and Baja California Sur where they are only breeding resident birds.[citation needed] Extreme individuals have travelled as far as Canada, with one bird in 2009 reaching as far north as Brampton, Ontario, Canada.[3]"

Back in the early 1980s I worked at the old Helix Rental in chicago. We would assemble similar set-ups to see what we could do. Always ended up a waste of film. Got better images using one of our Nikon 1000mm or 2000mm cat lenses.

Using manual focus always stirs memories of the film days, the care that went in to the shot, the anticipation waiting for the film, and the disappointment when your once in a "life time", came back blurred.

I looked at all three in ddl, and the 400mm cropped looks sharper to these old eyes. Though the shady one looks pretty good also.

I agree Dean, I do not see a great difference but I do think the cropped 400 is better. Sharper and more color depth, a better presence.

Astrophotographers feel your pain. Try using 4,000mm f10 mounted on a moving mount, slight wind, ground vibrations, turbulent atmosphere, sometimes exposures minutes long to get pinpoint stars and nebulae trillions of miles away in 20 degree weather. Then you wonder why we are such an odd bunch.

I think that might be next for me alberio, sounds like an interesting setup can I borrow yours?

Now I feel better about my attempts at monster lens stacking....Florida heat makes it really tough, but for close in, it works! Just clumsy! I am impressed with the steadyness displayed in the first shots - handheld..pretty damn good!!

Thanks olemikey I am about 2k foot elevation on a clear cool winter day. The photo's of a Redtail 150 yds away did not turn out so well. SS was north of 500 and iso exceeded 6400 worthless except I could identify her dinner.

If you start at 5.6, add a 2x + a 1.4x, you are down 3 stops = f16 wide open. Seems it would be hard to get fine focus, but your photo of the bluebird is very sharp, great photo!

Thanks ELNikkor, I knew my camera was lying to me. With lots of light (bright sunny day) it was not as difficult as I thought it would to achieve focus. Reminded me of the film days before auto focus. Thank you

Heck just buy a Nikon 1200mm lens Last price I saw was only 125K

Great idea Manglesphoto, why don't you send me the $125k and I will send you a feather, that way we will both be tickled.
