I haven't had much luck with USB extension cords. I have to use them with USB hubs because they come with such short cords. I have the wireless mouse receiver plugged into a hub, and I have to unplug and reconnect the extension cord from the hub as it loses contact. I've tried three or four different extension cords, but I continue to have this problem. This is my latest.

If you think the problem is poor contact in the plugs, get a bottle of TWEEK and paint the contacts. That worked great when we used to have problems with the plugs on an IBM mini computer.

My thanks to all you who have made suggestions. I will definitely be driving the Ice Fields Parkway. Several other things I'd like to do will probably involve more hiking than my knees will stand (a few miles is probably my limit) so I'll have to skip them. Maybe I can find a tour that will take me to some of those places without my having to hike too many miles.

Thanks again.

Next month we will spend a couple of days in Calgary and then a few days in Golden, British Columbia. I plan to spend some time in the national parks. but I'd like suggestions of the best things to do and places to go in this area. Thanks for your help.

Sorry Fred, I got the wrong impression - that you were near Oblong. I'm 40 miles East of Normal

Normal makes headlines every once in a while. In Illinois there's also a town named Oblong. Many years ago a headline read "Normal girl marries Oblong man."

I have a few articles similar to this. They came with rolling suitcases and functioned by clipping the metal part onto a metal loop built onto the suitcase, then hanging a tote bag onto the "J" portion at the other end. This served the purpose of allowing you to displace the weight of a carry-bag from your shoulder to the suitcase.

Thanks OK, that makes sense. I can see how that would work. None of the other suggestions really fit what I was looking at. I don't know if it's right or not but it makes sense.

Looks like a pipe clip...may be part of your tripod to hang it up when not in use or to snap onto your backpack

Thanks for the reply, but if that's what it is, it belongs to someone else's tripod.

I forgot to put in the dimensions. It's 6 inches long, 2 inches wide and 2 inches high. That hinged half loop part will snap completely closed or open until the corrugated piece is perpendicular to the base. The corrugated piece will unsnap from the loop and remain in the base also.

I found this gadget in a bag of photo equipment and I haven't the slightest idea what it is. Does anyone know?

Orrie,
As others have said Alaska is awesome. I was there in 2012 with my wife, my daughter and a friend. I wanted to see the big Kodiak bears and I finally talked my daughter into it and we spent 3 days on Kodiak Island. After we got back my daughter said that was the best part of the whole trip. We were there at the end of June, first of July and we had rain only 2 days. Once on Kodiak, but we flew out of it when we flew out to the bear sanctuary. The other days there we rented a vehicle and drove from one end of the road to the other. The beaches were great - no sand, volcanic ash.

They arrive in flocks and within a very short time eat everything in sight including all that is animal, vegetable and sometimes I think, mineral. If it isn't nailed down it's gone. They are in all aspects a true nemesis for those whom watch and feed the birds.
They may look purty, but for the most parts they are a pest, and not welcome, especially to my yard.
I've also included a few pics of one of his distant cousins from the gulf coast of Texas, the Great-tailed Grackle. They are just a obnoxious down there as they are up here in Canada.

Your description is spot on. We used to have them by the hundreds in my and my neighbor's trees, pooping on everything. Some Coopers hawks moved in and now we get only a handful.
