Let us know how you like it with some images.

Absolutely. We have fawns running around our property right now so it will be a perfect time to have it.

What features are you looking for that the current lens does not offer?

Clarity. My current Tamron just won't take a clear picture. Everything is soft. I bought Steve Perry's excellent book on Auto Focus and read the entire book and have followed all the advice in it. I also bought his excellent wildlife book and am following the advice it as well. I've bought the system to check for front/back focus and tuned it in as best possible. Yet the eye is always soft no matter what, even with a static subject and the camera on a tripod. My primary concern was the 500 vs 600 but I took some pictures at 500mm and 600mm and the difference is so small that I really don't think that is a big deal. I've heard the 200-500 is much clearer and the pictures I've seen taken with it that seems to be true.

I probably should have added a little context around my question. I currently have the Tamron 150-600 G1. It wasn't long after I bought the G1 when Tamron came out with the G2 which is a significant improvement over the G1. I've since decided to switch to the Nikon 200-500. Thus the reason for my question.

Does anyone know about how often Nikon typically updates their lenses? I'm considering buying the 200-500mm but I know it's been out a couple years now and Tamron has come out with a new, much better, version of theirs. It seems that typically not long after I buy a lens the company comes out with a newer improved version. I don't want that to happen again. Has anyone heard any rumors if Nikon will be coming out with a new version of this lens anytime soon?

I agree on the Sony RX10 Mk3. As a matter of fact, I just ordered one last night. I have not seen a bad review on it yet. Most people say you are paying $1400 for the lens and getting the camera free. And it only weighs 3 lbs. Although you won't be able to put it in your pocket unless you have really huge pockets :-)

I have the filter tools linked earlier and they work great. But I found the even better solution is to stop using filters like that. I finally switched to Lee filter system and it's so easy to turn the ring on and off the lens when you need it. I can't even imagine going back to the round filters.

I don't have this but am considering buying one. Someone recently recommended it to me. The Sony RX10 Mk III. It looks fantastic and goes from 24-600mm with excellent results. I haven't read a bad review on it yet. I haven't seen anything else out there that you can attach to a DSLR that can reach out to 600mm that weighs only 3lbs. It would be great to carry around when you don't want to lug 10+ lbs of camera gear around.

I'm with whitewolfowner on this. I did not subscribe to Popular Science because that is not what I was interested in. I'll be calling and asking for a refund as well. It's kind of irritating that they just assume we are ok with substituting some other completely unrelated magazine.

Google "Buy Dig eBay" instead of just "Buy Dig" if that's what you Googled. It will take you to the Buy Dig eBay website. Once you have the Tamron lens page, you will see 2 different listings for the G2 lens. One price is $1399.00 and the other is 1699.00 crossed out and it says "see price in cart". When you do that, you have to login to eBay if you have an account in order to see the price they are selling it for. I haven't bought or sold anything on eBay in years, so I was not able to login and check the price. Lots of times when they tell you to check the price in the cart it is because the price they are selling it for is quite a bit cheaper. It may not be, but there are 2 listings for the G2 lens on the Buy Dig eBay website and it may be cheaper.
Google "Buy Dig eBay" instead of just &q... (show quote)

I did search for "Buy Dig eBay" and the first one that came up with the link I provided. Apparently Google is returning different results for me. If I remove the quotes I do find their ebay site. I click on the See Price on Checkout link it takes me to a page that lists the lens at $1399 and asks if I want to buy one. I cannot seem to find the one listed for $1099.

G2 $1099 on sale at Buy Dig Ebay. It is USA model. The price might help you with your decision. They are authorized Tamron sellers.

Do you have a link? I searched google for it and went to that site but it only has it for $1399.

You don't mention which camera you are using. The camera body can make a huge difference in focus speed.

Myself, I use the Tamron 150-600 I on either a Canon (I know you are using Nikon but) 7D or 70D and the focus is more than fast enough for flying birds. The sharpness is also quite fine and any improvement brought about by any other lens, even a prime let alone the new Tamron or Nikon 200-500, would be small and not worth the purchase price.

Just some food for thought.

Oh sorry I meant to but must have forgotten. I have 2 bodies, Nikon D750 (full frame) and D7200 (crop frame).

You mustn't have checked out the RX10 III. It is a fixed lens camera. It happens to have a lens that will blow away just about any zoom lens on the market. It is f/2.4-4, 24-600mm. It is lightweight when compared to any long zoom. The people buying it, like me, aren't changing camera systems. Ken Rockwell says that after he tested the camera it is now his walkaround camera.

I bought it for a cruise that includes a tour of the Yukon and Alaska (Denali Park).

Oh I see, you are suggesting that in addition to my current gear, not to replace it. Hmmm I hadn't considered that. I'll have to take a look at it. Although I struggle to understand how they are reaching out to 600mm with such a small lightweight lens without using digital enhancement or something. But I'll definitely take a look at it.

I traded my G1 for the Nikkor and am very happy with that decision. I use it on the D500.

What steered you to the Nikkor over the Tamron G2 or the Sigma Sport? As I mentioned in my original post, my primary concern with the Nikkor is the shorter focal length and slower focus. I understand it's VR is better but I rarely shoot handheld. I usually shoot wildlife on a gimbal so VR isn't a huge selling point for me with this particular lens decision.

For just about the same price you can get a camera and a stunning lens. Check out the review on Ken Rockwell's site of the Sony RX10 III which has an outstanding Zeiss 24-600 lens and it doesn't weigh a ton.

Don

I have a significant investment in Nikon gear. I think right now it would be very difficult to try to switch to a whole new system.
