Has anyone availed themselves of a photo excursion with PWC of North Carolina?
I’m signed up with them for a week im Banff this June.

Thanks for any impressions.

I looked over their site. The lack of detail is astounding. You have no idea who will lead thus you are buying like a blind man. Workshops seem very short and there is absolutely no mention of any educational component.

I would avoid like a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

I have had an account with Zenfolio for several years. I create galleries for casual viewing, not for sales. I have about 2k images online. My main problem is that I am currently unable to view any of my photos. The thumbnails will not load into viewable size at all. Another problem is Zenfolio's current practice of the archiving of galleries. If want to view an archived gallery, you can theoretically restore it, but it may take 12 hours to do so. One more problem is the continuing upward spiral in price. It was $50 per year, then $60, now it is $77 for the "basic" plan. So, my fellow UHH readers, what say you about Flickr, or SmugMug? Or, any other place where I can create a nice site for family viewing (not just storage)?

If you subscribe to the Adobe Portfolio plan it does include the Adobe Portfolios. The best part is that you have already paid for it. Although it is marginally documented how to set it up, it you have any experience with web sites you should be able to figure it out. As I recall you can have up to 4 different websites and you can tag one with any address(URL) that you want.

Why weren't there protective concrete pylons in front of each bridge support that would have brought any ship to a stop before actually hitting the bridge supports? Granted, I'm not an engineer, but it seems like common sense.

Every bridge I have ever seen on the Mississippi River has large concrete abutments to prevent them being damaged by wayward barges. The concrete on the collapsed bridge had some concrete but the films clearly show the ship hitting the metal stanchions well above the concrete. Bad design IMHO.

BH sites says the filter is safe for the camera/lens but not for viewing. Other sources say to never use an ND filter for a solar eclipse as it does not filter IR or UV and will damage lens and camera. Other sources say that an ND filter greater than 16 stops is safe for protecting lens/camera. With so much conflict in opinions is there a source of accurate information? Perhaps one should go with just a solar film filter like 1000 Oaks. Of course ND filters have the advantage of being threaded vs film filters that need to be attached by another means. Not sure the convenience of the ND filter is worth the risk without hearing from an authoritative source who can clarify the science. Appreciate any input anyone can provide.

How long have you been using those?

I like the look and size but in 2023 they had a rash of defective ones.

Since they released the first 1TB SSD.

Would like to hear from you regarding your choices of portable SSD storage. Looking to add both a travel unit and a back up unit for my laptop. Not looking for a RAID drive or anything super expensive. See lots of nice looking options from Seagate but found lots of negative stuff regarding failures. That however was dated back in 2023. Have their issues been solved yet?
Thanks,

I had a 2 TB Samsung SSD and I was always misplacing it due to it's small size and neutral gray color. I switched to the SanDisk 2 TB and now the 4TB SSD drives which are a darker gray but have bright orange strip in side the window.

For travel, I use a pair of 4 TB SanDisk SSD drives. One as a primary and one for backup. I have never had a problem with data loss using the SanDisk SSDs.

if available what is use by date? how to get you the $?

Use by date is just what the name suggests. There are two dates printed on each box in the YYYYMMDD format. These span a range. On one occasion I used an out of date Epson cartridge that killed a 24" wide Epson printer even after paying a group to come 180 miles from Chicago to try and resurrect it. Replacing the print head would have cost more than replacing the printer when labor & travel charges are included. While this may have been a "one off" event, I will never purchase a cartridge that is offered after the second date printed on cartridge's box.

From a Google Search : "Epson UltraChrome HDX ink has a roughly two-year shelf-life after manufacture, and the dates printed on the cartridges and boxes show both the packaging date for that batch of ink and also the date two years in the future when the ink will expire." Read it here.

It is nice but I find the paper white sky replacement a bit too jarring. Try toning the sky selection a little just so it's L value is in the range of 90-93.

I’m a Nikon shooter and had tried out several “super zooms” over the years for my various F mount bodies and never satisfied enough with the sharpness and resolution especially at the long ends to buy one. Instead, I made do with carrying my 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8. Fast forward to today where I own a Z8 and the same two lenses in Z mounts. Both of those lenses are sensational in image quality - better even than my beloved F mount versions. But I’m 76 and leaving for a 2 week vacation abroad and simply cannot haul my fast Z lenses. I tried a Sony 6700 with some Zeiss glass which is significantly lighter and smaller on a 2 week trip to Spain, but I just wasn’t consistently thrilled with results.

So, based on my extraordinary fast Z glass, I took the plunge and picked up a Z 24-200/6.3 lens on sale for $700. Glad I did. The lens on my Z8 is a surprisingly good performer. It is manageable on a Black Rapid sling strap, both from size and weight point of view, and while the images at 200mm will not cause me to give up my 2.8 version, the all in one lens is surprisingly good both in IQ, color and contrast. Yes it’s f6.3 at much past 50mm, but the excellent Z8 sensor together with the available, magical noise control software, I can live with the slow speed.

As I said, I’m using this rig for vacation pics and I’m happy to have a credible option for lighter weight travel.

Be sure to lock the lens when carrying as it has a tendency to "auto zoom" , i.e. extend under it's own weight.
