No, it doesn't encourage software piracy. Only criminals steal from others.

The fact that we don't see a reasonable justification for a higher market price doesn't mean that one doesn't exist.

If no one in Oz paid that price, Adobe would have two choices: lower the price, or stop selling the product. If neither of those options is happening, then there must be enough honest Ozzies purchasing at that price point.

We are discussing ways to protect that which must be left in the car. Seriously if you have nothing constructive to offer maybe just move on to another topic.

You're the one who brought up stuff that didn't need to be left in the car. If you're going to engage in risky behavior, there's not much constructive anyone can offer you.

The best protection is not to have expensive items in the car. Don't let others in the parking lot see you getting out with it, or see you swapping equipment in and out before you walk away from the car.

All it takes is someone in the ballpark, looking for someone with "higher end" equipment, and following your friend out to his car. If they know anything at all about pro cameras, they'll expect to see him at every home game, and they'll be looking for his car after he's had time to replace everything. And even if they don't have the right equipment to break in next time, it's easy to find and come back later.

Why he might have fourteen iPads is irrelevant. Why he had them IN AN INSECURE LOCATION is the question.

Cars get broken into all the time. Especially in large parking lots, and especially in big expensive cars. "Being prepared" doesn't mean pretending that bad things never happen.

Um, you need certain things for one shoot and other things for other shoots. Leaving it at home means getting fired because you cannot upload the images of old Mitt and then buzz over to the stadium for the game where you can upload in the morning. I'm talking about working photographers who need to carry a lot of stuff but it could apply to anyone who carries a lot of expensive gear.

Um, a laptop AND multiple iPads? Sorry, that's just bad planning on your friend's part. I hope he was at least smart enough to stow all that stuff in the trunk, instead of up front where it's easily spotted thru the windows. It's nonsense like that that costs the rest of us to pay higher premiums on our stuff.

If having all that stuff handy just in case is the only option, then keep good insurance and be prepared for the consequences.

In a situation like that, I can certainly see needing a couple of bodies and a laptop. Multiple iPads and additional bodies, too?

If you can't carry it, you can't use it. Leave it at home.

How about not leaving valuables in the car?

Does anyone know if there is any truth to the talk of a 'SX50' ? And I don't mean the projector. :-)

Yes. The question is not "if", but "when". Probably at the Photokina show, later this month.

I'll be surprised if there are any big improvements. Unless they've figured out how to speed up focus and shot-to-shot times, I'll stay with the SX40.

I'd sure be happy to be surprised, tho!! :)

Kodak will always be the company that got me into digital photography. Sad to see what's happened to them over the last five years. :(

I agree that a bridge cam would be the best place to start. Not discouragingly expensive, but lots of manual options to experiment with.

And easy to sell, if she decides it's not for her.

Do you have a link for the sx50 rumors or whatever? I have searched but haven't found anything.

Watch canonrumors.com. If there's anything out there, they'll have it.

If you can't find the $275 price, Canon Direct has a refurbished SX40 for $343.

The problem with the bridge cameras is they can't pick up nearly the detail as an slr. When you zoom in 100% you see the difference. You notice the difference when you make enlargements. With that said if you don't plan on selling your pics and your doing it for fun then a good bridge is the way to go. You can get more pics without buying 4 different lenses when the bridge covers it all.

Well said.

You can get some great pics with a bridge cam. But the same pic will look far better with a DSLR.

It's just a question of how much effort you want to put into getting the better image. Sometimes it's not worth it, sometimes it is.

Now the question I need help with: should I install CHDK and learn the system with both installed or learn the camera system only first and install CHDK after mastering the base system.
Let's hear from all you UHH SX40 owners and others with an opinion.

Install CHDK and learn it with both installed. Better to have it if you need it.

I own the SX40, and I love it. I love the versatility, being able to go from wide to zoom on the fly.

I bought an DSLR last year, and it blows the SX40 image quality away. OTOH, it was work: lugging all the stuff around, getting the camera to do things that auto just couldn't handle. It just wasn't fun anymore. So I sold it.

In looking back at my best photos of last year, the DSLR pics stand head and shoulders above the rest.

So I'm saving up for a new one later this year. I'll carry the SX40 as my "daily driver", and break out the DSLR for "special occasions".

Your mileage may vary.
