No surprise here. Some lenses, yours included, were just not designed for use with a TC, whether it fits physically or not. Along with multiplying the focal length, a 1.4 TC 'steals' one full stop of light, so your F5.6 becomes F8 when at the long end. Many AF systems will not work at that F stop. Now you know for sure. Best of luck.

Yes, what you said is very true. Thanks for your reply!

Hi Waterboy23
The only time I have success with a teleconverter is with an f4 or better lens. Both the lens and the teleconverter have to have excellent quality since any imperfections get amplified. That said I've been very happy with the canon 2X teleconverter used with the canon 70-200mm f2.8 and the canon 500mm f4.0 lens. Needless to say these lens bust the bank for awhile (particularly the 500mm even though I bought it used, but it is a beautiful lens that is sharp all the way to the edge).

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. If I ever go for a quality zoom like those you described, I might be tempted to consider a quality TC to extend it.

I'm curious as to why you didn't take the advice given to you. What is the point in asking for help and then turn your back on them?

Actually, the advice was mixed as some said I might be happy with the results even if I had to use manual focus.

I sent my Kenko 1.4x back to B&H and will stick with my Nikon 55-300mm lens for now. But your shots were very nice indeed.

That particular lens has decent optics for an inexpensive zoom lens but it has really crappy VR. We're you shooting with the VR turned on? Remember, a teleconverter amplifies things, good and bad. If you were shooting with the VR turned on and didn't give it an extra second or so to stabilize, you will end up with crappy results. Another thing, since Nikon does not make a teleconverter that's compatible with that lens, didn't you think they have a good reason for it?

I'm pretty sure I turned the VR because they said to do that in the instructions that came with the teleconverter. I knew that Nikon did not recommend a TC for my lens but based on some of the comments I received in connection with my original post, I thought there was a possibility that it might work. I took a chance and I lost!

Thanks, I googled it too.

I recently asked for advice in the section on Main Photography Discussion for the possible purchase of a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter for my AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR lens and Nikon D7100 body.

After digesting all of the suggestions and against the advice of all the well-meaning naysayers, I opted to buy a 1.4x Kenko teleconverter.

A few days ago, I visited the Cape May Zoo in New Jersey to test it out and the experience was a total disaster. I had to use manual focus and could only use F stops larger than F8. I had been forewarned but the experience was worse than I could imagine.

I'm going to return the Kenko as soon as possible but I thought I'd post a few of my shots anyway, the first three with the teleconverter on and the last two without it.

Number 1 is a female African lion, 2 & 3 is a golden lion tamarin monkey, and 4 & 5 are otters. I welcome any and all comments! Thanks in advance. Gene

Try using the built-in 1.3X crop on your D7100 (in the menu under "Image Area"), It will use the center of the image, best part/sharpest part through the lens. You go from a 24 X 16 to 18 x 12 mm image, drop to approx 15.3 MP, but lose no light in the process. It is a crop, but for a quick change in reach w/o having to change lenses, or adding a T/C, no light loss, so all functions work like they should. I like to fill the frame too, much like the big lens would allow, but if I don't have it with me, or will lose the shot due to the change, I simply push a button and rotate the wheel. A T/C will give a bigger image, but the added glass and light loss usually degrade past the point where a crop will still provide a fine image. Just something to try, that is already available, no cost.
Enjoy.

It's your money. You can throw it away anyway you want.

If I could extend the reach of my 150-300mm zoom to 510mm, I wouldn't consider a waste of my money. My 150-600mm Sigma is a little too heavy for me to use these days without a tripod. My 86-year-old body ain't what it used to be!

I didn't understand what you meant by '..."lose" so it should be okay.'

Thanks. I used your link to send Nikon an email with the same essential question I asked on UHH.

I have a Canon and my equivalent lens has only one manufaturer that makes a teleconverter to fit, I think Kenbo, and that was added to their line relatively recently. I decided not to waste my money.
Why do you need it if you already have the Sigma 150-600? Just curious.

My Sigma 150-600 is getting a bit too heavy for me to use without a tripod so I thought why not try to extend the reach of my 55-300 Nikon.

I am considering the purchase of a Nikon 1.7 teleconverter for use with my AF-S Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G ED VR lens and Nikon D7100 camera body. I called B&H Camera and the person I spoke to told me that my lens would not be compatible with ANY teleconverters. I pointed out that the Nikon Compatibility Chart for Teleconverters listed their 1.7 teleconverter with the note AF(1), meaning that autofocus is only possible with lenses having a max. aperature of f/4 or greater. Since my lens has a maximum aperature of only 4.5, I'm guessing I could use the teleconverter with manual focus but this person said I couldn't use it, PERIOD. I should mention that I already have a Sigma 2x teleconverter which I bought for a Sigma 150-600mm lens but I couldn't seem to attach it to my 55-300mm Nikon lens or camera body. Any comments or suggestions would be most welcome!

From within PSE with your image open, use menu command: File / Save for Web. If needed, adjust the file type to JPEG at a quality between 80% and 100%. Create the resulting file someplace familiar, like your desktop. Then, open your email program and attach that JPEG file to the email and send. You'll avoid a lot of problems from your out-of-date and unsupported PSE12 vs trying to troubleshoot the email API automation.

If you have issues on the 'size' of the JPEG such as maybe being too big to send as an email attachment, use the PS / PSE example at the bottom of this post: Recommended resizing parameters for digital images. Note specifically the recommendation to resize your digital images to 2048-pixels on the 'long side'. The 'save for web' dialog above gives you an option to make this change before saving the JPEG.

What you're suggesting is actually what I have to do to when I use Picasa to send photos by email. I transfer the photos to my desktop and then attach the photos to my email. I will now try to do the same thing using PSE12. Instead of attaching JPEGs, though, I may be able to attach "shortcuts" and get more photos on one email. Many thanks for your help.
