Not sure if this is the correct section but here goes. My old 20/21 inch HP monitor just died (quite suddenly). I am writing this using a much older 17 inch monitor with my desktop. My question concerns the purchase of a new monitor. Based on budget and space limitations, I find that I a new replacement monitor cannot exceed a $200 and 23/24". I am a hobbyist but do take a lot of photos of flowers, grandchildren, other people, landscapes, etc. I do some limited post processing and have Lightroom 4 and Elements 11. I would like to purchase a new monitor as soon as possible. I have Googled a search and find that there are almost limitless candidates. I am not aligned with any particular name brand or model at this point. Any suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
Dan

Just think if Canon or Nikon or Ford or Honda had to do that with their products?!

With a 2x teleconverter wouldn't u be only only be able to stop down to a 6.3 if the lens was initially an f4 lens?

Yes, that's correct. However, the original post and question was only concerning a 1.4X.

Get the Canon 1.4X TC. I have had 2 Tamron 70-300mm and I was never pleased with the quality.

I have used both the Kenko 1.4x and 2x (7 element) TCs on the 70-200mm f/4 lens and the Canon 1.4X was by far the best.

Exactly the information that I requested. Thanks to all.

I did consider the 2X converter. However, with a 2 stop loss in light, this lens would only allow manual focus. At least with the 1.4X I think I could use AF as long as I had the lens set at F4. Again, my original question was concerning the cost/benefit of the canon vs tamron vs kenko converters.
Thanks,

Good point, though I am expecting an increase in IQ with the 70-200 in comparing the two lenses, at least in the shorter ranges. My thinking is that even with the tele the I.Q. of the 70-200 should be no worse than the 70-300 without a tele.

Thanks. I thought as much.

I just purchased a used canon 70-200 f4 IS lens on Ebay. The lens is great and is everything I expected. I now plan to sell my Tamron 70-300 and purchase a 1.4X teleconverter for the newly purchased Canon lens. Based on recent eBay sales data the Tamron should auction for around $200 to $250. The proceeds from the sale will be used for the 1.4X teleconverter purchase. I have looked over data on the tamron, kenko and canon converters and am quite confused. Based solely on Amazon pricing, the Canon teleconverter is twice the cost of the Tamron which is in turn about 1.5 times the Kenko. Based on the quality of the 70-200 lens, after I sell the Tamron 70-300 lens, should I hold out and save additional money for the Canon teleconverter or would the Tamron and/or Kenko yield comparable results? The Canon 70-200 lens is a premiere lens and I don't want to spoil its quality with an inferior teleconverter. You Hoggers are a smart and wiley bunch and I respect your opinions. Thanks in advance.

I think I found the problem. My computer has a virus that somehow sneaked in when my back was turned. Other programs are acting as though they have minds of their own as well. Let me see if I can take care of the bug and then attack the Lightroom situation. Thanks to all who contributed expertise and responses and sorry to have been such a pest with what was actually a non-photo software problem.
Regards,
Dan

As I said, I can't afford Lightroom 5 at this time. I do have a 64 bit machine. The one time that I tried Synchronize, it destroyed all my meticulously created folders accumulated for an entire year and reinserted its own date rated folders which I cannot freely use due to the time rated organization. I did not copy files within Lightroom; but rather, I left the files alone, merely copying them using explorer to another hard drive that is not affected by Lightroom. All my files are stored on two external hard drives. Lightroom knows about only one of the drives while the other is innocuous to Lightroom.
At this time I am weighing the possibility of uninstalling Lightroom and starting over.

Synchronize scares me. I tried it once and an entire year's (2013) photos were reorganized (disoriented) into a fashion that I could not interpret nor use. It causes me to have to search endlessly through all the date taken oriented folders whereas the folders that I originally set up were eliminated. BTW, I use subject, not date, organizing as my preference. I am on a 64 bit machine, but right now, can't afford (retired on fixed income)a new version of Lightroom. Thanks again Searcher for the input.

It is now morning. It seems that Lightroom would only make the orientation changes as the previews became visible on the screen and was not necessarily performing the task in the background. Prior to going to bed I attempted a backup and left the computer to perform that task. Upon awakening and checking on the computer, I found that the task still had not been completed. Not sure what is happening here. I will attempt another backup.
Apparently the only time that the orientation changes will occur is when the photos come to the screen. I minimized the sizes to accomplish the task quicker since more photos would come to the screen. Another computer glitch, perhaps?

Thanks so much Searcher. That seems to be working although it looks as though it will take quite a while to remedy all those photos. Can't beat UHH expertise.

But what do you think I did to cause this situation in the first place? I'm still nonplussed.

All of a sudden all my photo previews in Lightroom (approximately 50,000 shots) have turned 90 degrees and now all appear to be in portrait mode instead of landscape. The same photos show up in Picasa normally so I know the photos haven't actually changed their position. Any ideas as to what have I may have done to have caused this? All I have done lately is copy a folder from from one hard drive to another using windows explorer. I did nothing to the photos except copy and paste and left all photos as they were. Then, when I restarted Lightroom, this happened, not to just the folder in question, but to every last photo in Lightroom. What gives?
