I watched another video from Tony Northrup last night, and he came down strong against gray market gear. He unknowingly bought a gray market lens, and he had trouble getting it repaired. He finally found a shop that cheated and fixed it for him. If you think your item will never need repair, you can save some money, but if it were me, I'd always worry about something going wrong with it.

I bought a Chevrolet from a Ford dealer. It broke and I brought it to a Chevrolet repair shop. They told me they could not fix it because I bought it at a Ford dealer (NOT).
Tony Northrop just likes to hear himself talk. Very seldom does he present anything he does not twist with his own perspective on what he thinks it means. He rarely does any real good research on what ever he is talking about.
Grey market usually means International or not specifically marketed for your country or area. It most of the time means no warranty, so if it breaks you have to pay to have it fixed. It's pretty much still a Chevrolet. You can bring it to the Chevrolet dealer and have it fixed. You just have to pay for it.

Recently helped clear home of cousins that had passed. No kids. There were 15 boxes w/8-10 photo albums in each box. Several photos were saved. The balance: thrown out. Same with my brother-in-law’s 12 boxes of slides. Pulled 20 slides to scan. Discarding the rest. What remains of value when we’re gone? The family’s not interested in old photos of standing beside old friends, long forgotten, at the edge of the Grand Canyon…black bears eating fish in a stream.

Our photos bring us joy, but our 10K of photos need to be culled, regularly, so when we are gone there will be a few of the great-grand ancestors, a few of our favorites, but then…what will have value for the next generation? Not much.

Holding onto things, it’s a weighty responsibility, and what is the payoff?

just my thoughts on this. the longest lasting and records of life through the ages are drawing on cave walls. then there are drawings and paintings through the ages. camera obscura started our journey into photography. the printed photo's are a cornucopia of the history and life styles of family's, recreation, and environment. not many of the tools used to capture those images survive, only the hard final product of images. for most of us those images are personal but they feed into a tremendously large history of us. the capture tools and storage methods go away and change (how many vhs tapes sit idle and disintegrating with not much left to present the images they captured. cd's are pretty much gone, electromagnetic media is a moving an volatile target. It's amazing how those printed images on little pieces of glass, and paper have survived. prints... an interesting concept to consider. just sayin.

Frankie c, your point is made well, and your superb image is yet further testimony to the wisdom of initiating this new Smartphone Section of UHH!
I have been a serious photographer since 1947 and can attest to the fact that my best images at any particular time have invariably been the product of the camera I was using at that particular point in my career - and so it continues to be true. That observation - intuitively obvious - is not original- I first heard it from my dad, a technical and promotional writer for Eastman from the 40s thru the late 60s.
…and so it goes!

thanks for the response. technology marches on. I take it you were talking about your dad at Eastman Kodak. I started there in 67 right after I got out of the army. Were you in Rochester?

I never really used or considered using my phone for any of my more serious photography. I must say have admired work presented on social media from phone photography. I have used my phone camera for quick shots to send to friends etc. I think I have had an epiphany, with my new S21. I am starting to explore the possibilities. Here is my first entry. I did add an effect with PS elements. However, the original image is what allowed me to accomplish this. I even got a great print.
