My source, "Picture This", indicates that it is Pacific Pea, Lathyrus vestitus . Picture This is on my cell phone and identifies plants.

Welcome . . . Very nice pictures. The Border Collie pup will keep you busy. I have owned 3 of the breed. They are very intelligent and can be taught amazing things to do. I apologize if you already know about the capabilities of your pup. I really loved mine but now I am 90 years old and could not do a Border Collie justice so I now just look a videos of them working.

The hairy woodpecker is larger than the downy—about nine inches from the tip of its beak to the end of its tail. (To compare, the downy woodpecker is about six and a half inches long.) A more reliable way to notice their size differences is to look at the shape of their beaks.

Female Hairy

Male Downy

Thanks for the info . . . there is no way I can see it from anywhere near where I live since it is low in the sky. Too many hills and trees in our area. Also small and large towns in the southeast.

I will just rely on looking at your pictures of it.

A very good shot and thanks for the camera settings.

What time of the night and facing what direction?

Your bird is a Hairy. Notice the length of the beak . . . The length of the Downey (spot of red on back of its head) beak is much shorter than that of the Hairy.

Following Rockdog's lead from earlier this month I drove 80 miles to the refuge. The rains had just cleared and I had the whole place to myself. I managed to capture some long range shots of the snow geese, the Sutter Buttes and a close up of some plants I know not the name of. Check out the downloads please.
Canon 60D and Tamron 150-600mm zoom.

It's a Red-bellied Woodpecker

It is a male golden-fronted woodpecker found mostly in Texas and Mexico. www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Golden-fronted_Woodpecker/overview
