For you add's out there,if you want a 300mm lens then go out and buy one. Don't be cheap and get a 200mm and say I've got a 300mm.

That's right the key to this topic is magnification, which the x cameras are missing when using a smaller lens. Again 100 does not equal 150 you silly rabbits!!!!!!!

Will you please drive a stake through the hearts of the idiots who think they have a 150mm lens from a 100mm lens mounted on a 1.5x sensor camera.

Did you actually go to the link? Do you think that a bunch of smiley faces mean understanding? Are you aware you can change the magnification of a telescope by changing the eyepiece? That a telescope with a shorter focal length can give a higher magnification than one with a longer focal length? God and I thought there were knotheads in my Math 400 class and used to wonder how they made it there. This stuff is trivial but obviously not to everyone. I give up.

You may as well give up,that's because your in hiding.

This was from the link:
Using an FLM of 1.5, for example, a photographer might say that a 50 mm lens on his DSLR "acts like" its focal length has been multiplied by 1.5, by which he means that it has the same field of view as a 75 mm lens on the film camera that he is more familiar with. Of course, the actual focal length of a photographic lens is fixed by its optical construction, and does not change with the format of the sensor that is put behind it.

Which should have ended the matter. Terms such as "acts like", "for all intents and purposes", "in effect", "EFL" mean the same thing; the image size on the film is the same for both systems.

Since idiot169 obviously didn't click on the link I thought using magnification by a telescope where the magnification can be varied by changing the focal length of the eyepiece and is analogous to changing the field of view of a telephoto lens by varying the sensor size would help clarify but I was wrong. And obviously wrong to respond at all to that idiot who started this thread. I give up. Think what you want think about. Or think like Wlliam Jennings Bryan who chose not to think about things he didn't think about.
This was from the link: br Using an FLM of 1.5, fo... (show quote)

Looks like your the idiot, you responded by cropping your brain size to look like the normal angle of view.

Try this link and maybe you'll understand what "cropped sensor" refers to. This term is supposed to help but has obviously come up short. At least in your case. Maybe the term "form factor" will stop you thinking about pixels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crop_factor

You idiots are still arguing about something your brains can't comprehend.

Yes it does Doc ..... for all intents and purposes you've got a 150mm piece of glass ..... this has been beat to death more times than I can count ..... wabbits only have 6 toes ..... anyway what's your point ?
No for all intents and purposes you have a 100mm piece of glass. A 100mm is a 100mm and a 150mm is a 150mm. THE X FACTOR DOES NOT CHANGE YOUR FOCAL LENGTH. Got it doc

I don't know what kind of camera you have but I've got a "full frame" and a "cropped frame". A 200mm on the cropped gives an identical view to the 300mm on the full frame. Neither lens brings ME any closer to the subject. The 200mm is still 200mm. I checked the marking on the front of the lens and it didn't change at all. Should be the end of the story but I doubt it. Manufacturers fooling people? Sounds like conspiracy theory when it's actually just simple geometry.

You still don't get it !!!!!!!! :hunf: :hunf: :hunf: :hunf: A 300mm lens will bring you closer than a 200mm lens, screw the pixels, they have nothing to do with it. View has nothing to do with magnification. 300mm will bring you closer than a 200mm. Plain and simple why can't you disbelievers soak this in ????????? :hunf: :hunf: :hunf:

Not quite that simple. No, you do not have a 300mm lens, but you do have the same angle of view as you would have with a 300mm lens on a full format, 35mm sensor, and you are not cropping the image as you would in post processing. Given an equal number of pixels in the covered area there should no difference in IQ. But there are many other factors in determining if this is so.

Doesn't anybody get it ? A 200mm lens on small 1.5x sensor does not bring you as close to the subject than a 300mm lens on a full frame. Simple as that !!!!! The manufacturers are fooling people on this. SOME SMART PEOPLE ON THIS SITE GOT IT RIGHT AWAY. OTHERS STILL HAVE THEIR HEAD SPINNING!!!!!!

Boy o' boy this topic really started an uproar on this site. All I was stating was, that a smaller sensor camera does not change your focal length like many others still think it does. If you want a telephoto 300mm lens, you can not put a 200mm lens on a 1.5x sensor camera and say you now have a 300. Simple as that!!!!!!

It doesn't effectively become your focal length as you stated. What part don't you understand ??
