Loved these. So unique and and educational. Feel like I was there even though at my age and with my fear of heights I will probably never make it. Thank you for taking and sharing. Please post more.

As a consumer, when I buy a new product, I expect that detailed and complete instructions on how to assemble and use that product will be included in the box with the product, written so I can clearly read and understand...just like I expect the product to work as advertised and the manufacturer to stand behind the product and fix any problems...and I don’t expect to pay extra for the instructions, the service or any customer service interactions to get it working properly. These are all part of the product I am buying...and if they aren’t then the product is returned as unsatisfactory. I do not want to have to read or print a manual (or assembly instructions) on the computer/internet. I won’t pay extra for any of these essentials. And any manufacturer who tries to cut their costs and increase their bottom line by getting me to pay for these loses me as a customer. They are in the business of servicing me, not visa-versa.

I used this camera for about 5 years as a travel and hiking camera. I liked it so much that two of my friends bought it for themselves. Unfortunately it was stolen out of my car last March. I thought I would be able to get by without replacing it as I have three other cameras, but I missed it so much that two weeks ago I bought a refurbished SX60. They are basically the same...(the SX50 and SX60) but I like the SX60 better as Canon has rearranged some of the buttons and it works better for my hands. This is a great camera that fits most needs from macro to telephoto. Buy your wife the camera!!

Thank you physjj for sharing your experiences. Very helpful. I did in fact buy the SX50.

I know exactly how you feel. I sold my Canon 60D and lenses and feel liberated. I have the SX50 and several other cameras including the Panasonic LX7 which I also love. My most recent acquisition is the Canon G9X with a one inch sensor. Enjoying every minute with these smaller, yet reliable cameras. You will ove the Canon SX50.

Thank you, hj, for your thoughts and support. Always good to know I'm not alone in my thinking. I'll let you know how it goes.

StanMac,
Thank you for the suggestions. Lots to learn about and consider here. Unfortunately, however, in these days of Covid, I don’t have an extra $500-$1500 to spend.

Thank you everyone for your help, offers and suggestions. I bought an SX50 yesterday. I hope my wife loves it. But if not, then It will likely replace my D5100 with all the extras and hopefully I can get back to enjoying photography with a single camera and lens combination capable of covering everything I do now and more. To tell the truth, as I’ve gotten older I’ve grown to hate dealing with all that gear and worrying with all the extra complexities of a DSLR. I used to enjoy photography. It used to be fun.

Bultaco,
Have to laugh because I lose more stuff this way. My wife too loves to bind with many of the things I buy. ;-)

Good luck getting hold of the SX50, as it went out of production, replaced by the SX60. I had the SX50 for several years (until it it gave up the ghost) and found it to be the best bridge camera I ever had. I showed a friend (who said bridge cameras were 'toys') a shot of Jupiter and 4 of its moons..he was amazed. I have had a couple 50 * zoom bridge cameras (sony and panasonic) since, but none came anywhere near the quality of shots like the Canon SX50!

Thank you for sharing your experiences, Doddy.

I recently sold my SX50 to purchase a Sony RX 10 MKIV. The SX 50 was a phenomenal camera. I talked my son-in-law into buying one a couple of years ago right after I bought mine and he still has, uses, and loves it. So, that's two thumbs up for the SX50. Easy to use with excellent results in a compact package.

Thank you for your inputs, Ava’sPapa
