Fine image Erich. The fog adds a layer of mystery to the image.

Thank you. I think without the fog, this would not be much more than a record shot of where I was; but the fog, and to an extent the lights, raise it up a notch in my estimation. Thank you for taking a look.

I don't always carry my big, er very big , 100-400 zoom; but when I do, I usually find something to point it at. Here I was standing on the other side of an inlet while the man on the other side was fishing and not really noticing me at all. I was all the way zoomed in at 400mm so the buildings behind the fisherman are foreshortened even though they are quite a distance away from where we were. I had to set the tripod as high as it would go to just barely get separation between the man's head and the rocks in the middle ground. The pre-dawn mist and lights also help this composition.

I never used Topaz; but it is quite distinct and unique. I've seen lots of interesting images using the software. I had to look hard for the bee; but I did find it.

Three weeks ago, my dad died at 95 years old. I was pondering what to do in honor of him. He cared for people and enjoyed talking with anyone regardless of their status in life.

So, I used my cartoon digital artistry and made this poster to honor him. --Richard

P.S. Anyone please critiqué this as you wish. I keep trying to learn more in all my art including photography and digital art.

So sorry for your loss. The cartoon tells the story.

I create very few images of a man because...well, they are far less pretty and I know because I am one.

This is a man that I created using a digital brush that emulates pastel chalk in Clip Studio Paint.

That brush too is really nice. It looks almost like a chalk drawing. I like the way these represent.

Photoshop and Topaz Studio 2

The first one really has an abstract feel to it. Very nice.

Ooops, aren't you glad to be back?

Re aspect, do you have to keep your photos in a specific aspect ratio for competition? Or, is it personal preference, or having to do with availability of standard mat and frame sizes?

I'm interested to discuss, because when I first went from Canon (native 3:2) to Lumix and Panasonic (native 4:3), I threw away pixels on the Lumix and set it to 3:2 because that is what I most loved for landscapes.

Resisted the occasional suggestion to do 16:9 for full screen viewing 'til that actually worked with a few.

But, bottom line is I crop for what I want the image to say, especially given I haven't printed and framed anything for several years.

Our club competitions do not have a requirement for a particular size or aspect ratio. I just thought, for this photo, that I did not want it to be too narrow top to bottom. Turns out that I was able to make the suggested crops and hardly alter the original aspect ratio. Still looks the same to me although I did not actually measure the dimensions.
So, all good. THanks

Read the suggestions and saw your changes, however the right end of the pier now hangs in the air. This is visually uncomfortable.

Yep, you are right. it is somewhat distracting. Then, when looking really close at the right side, the pillars are crooked because of the wide angle distortion at the edges. Not sure what I'll end up doing about that. It does not bother me, because I know what it is; but a judge might see things differently. Grrrrr.

I agree with Linda, the large area of beach seems to distract from the pier and light. I tried a 5x3 crop and that seems to reduce the wieght of the beach but still displays the light and dark gradiant well.

I decided to crop things a bit. Thanks for your input.

Tony, I'm sorry that I missed your comment earlier. I did decide to crop just a bit to make things a bit more tidy. Thank you for taking a look.

Sorry. I missed your comment earlier. I decided to make some minor crop adjustments; but I don't think it had that much of an effect on the overall image. Just made things a bit more tidy.
