Hi guys.

I am thinking about doing my first night shoot, for example star trails and light painting, long exposures on the coast, has anybody got any decent tips please, I have a Nikon D7000.

Many main concern is how can I properly focus at night when its pitch black, what is the best ISO and F number.
I have a large number of lenses covering from 10mm to 300 and ranging from f2.5 to 4.5.

Any tips would be much appreciated.

Best regards
Moggey

Hi Carogray, 10stop filter seem to be quite popular now.

Excellent. Like everything about it, from the composition to the B&W rendering. And thank you so much for getting the horizon level. Well executed.

Hi Dennstedt

Many thanks for your nice comments.

Wonderful B&W tones. I was wondering
how long of an exposure it took...

Hi this was a 3 minute exposure, F13 , 22mm and 100iso.

Many thanks for your comment.

I use Haida which come in various sizes to fit all lenses, I also have a 85mm and 100mm Hitech slot in filter, both produce great results.

Hi J Pixs

Tower bridge is a must, Canary Wharf/Docklands, the underground can produce some stunning shots, there is an over railway at Docklands, ive seen some great shots of this, but I would agree dont take out to much gear, this time of year is ideal, it gets dark early so there are still lots of people about and stick to the main streets, I would take a 10-24 and a 200 to cover most shots.

Cheers

Thank you all for your replies.

As suggested I will test out each lens, probably what I may do is create 2 bags , 1 with the D90 and 1 with the D7000, I will then split the lenses between the 2 them , keep 7000 at home for more planned outings and keep the 90 in the car as quite often when I'm out and about I see something and think that woul make a great shot, my old Iphone used to get me by but now the possibilities are limited only by my imagination.

Many thanks again

Hi All

I have been recieving your news letter for a while and find this site a great source of information so I have finally signed up to the forum.

I recently purchased a large amount of Nikon equipment from a friend who has decided to give up his hobby.

Here is the list

Nikon D7000 ( 700 shots )

Nikon D90 ( 4500 shots )

MB-D11 battery grip

Nikon AF-S 50mm F1.8 G

Nikon AF-S 105mm F2.8 G ED VR

Tamron DI SP 10-24mm F3.5

Sigma AP0 DG 70-300mm F4-5.6

Nikon AF-S 55-200mm F4.5 VR

Nikon AF-S 18-55mm F3.5 - 5.6

Nikon AF-S 18-105nn F3.5 -5.6

Tamron XR Di 11 SP 17-50mm F2.8 (if) Aspherical

Nikon AF-S 24-120mm F3.5-5.6 VR IF ED

Hoya AI 28-85mm F4

Speedlight SB 700

Manfrotto Carbon tripod

plus loads of filters / sd cards

I purchased all this for £1200 ( about $1900) and I guess I got a good deal.

My question is do I need all these lenses ? I seem to have a few that overlap

I am newish to photography but have always had an interest but intend to make this a big hobby.

Are there any lens recommendations ? I plan mainly to be doing landscape and architecture.

Many thanks in advance
