How about the Tokina 11-16mm. It can be had for about $450 at B&H.
The only drawback is it's a little soft which becomes noticeable at 100%
Double post for emphasis.

Faststone does convert RAW to .jpg, .tiff, .pdf and other formats.
It also has editing capabilities.
It's actually a very good tool for minor adjustments.

Faststone is another that gets good reviews: http://www.faststone.org/
Here's a wild guess.
Go to Custom Setting menu
Select "c." That should be "Timers/AE Lock"
Select "c1." That should be "Shutter-Release Button AE-L"
Select "On"
If "Off" is selected, the camera will only focus when the AE-L-AF-L button is pushed.
Welcome, Nikki, from Bothell.
I'd go for the D7000. Good noise control right out of the camera up to ISO 1600. It's lightweight and will give you a greater selection of lens (because the body has a lens motor in case a modle of lens you like doesn't have a motor).
Having said that, here's my disclaimer. I'm a Nikon guy all the way. Never owned any other brand of digital camera. I currently shoot with a D7000 and D200. You might try poking around http://www.nikonians.org to get some input from other Nikon shooter.
Good luck with your research.
