I lived in Alaska almost 30 years. One of my dads favorite poets was Robert Service. He had 'The spell of the Yukon' memorized and used to quote it from time to time. He had a gold mine North of Fairbanks and I still have gold that he mined. I have driven the AlCan Highway 13 times, the first in 1960 when over 1700 miles of it was dirt. Dad has been gone for 19 years now and mom for 9 and both are buried at the National Cemetary at Fort Richardson. My mothers passing was the last time I was in Alaska. I still have two brothers living there and my younger brother drives the highway up and back about every other year and has done it a couple of times on a motorcycle. Love and miss my parents, love Robert Service and have a few poems memorized on my own. Thank you for the memories and the photos.

My wife received a check from a local bank for an account she closed a year ago. The amount: $0.01 Now that was a surprise. We still have not decided which vacation to spend it on :-)

Back in my Navy days (66-69) , I had one picked out. As a Boatswains Mate I thought that was part of the job description. I pondered over the artwork many times, but as drunk as I got from time to time (an it happened from time to time) , it just never seemed to be enough to do the deed. I was discharged without a mark and to this day have kept that tradition alive. I still admire beautiful artwork, some of which I do not understand. I was in a mall several years ago and there was a 30 something male wearing a tank top type shirt. as I walked by him I noticed his artwork. I turned around and asked him if I could check out what he had done. Down his entire right arm was a wizard complete with the gold pointed hat with stars in it, but it was his left arm and half of his chest that totally amazed me. It was the head of an elephant with his arm being the trunk. Beautiful artwork, but nothing I would ever contemplate. Some of the artwork is just that - art. Some of it is just junk. Nothing I would ever do, but I do like art.

I have been on several of these roads as well. Rt 66 was so much fun. Drove the actual Rt 66 from Springfield MO to the End of the Navy Pier in Chicago (had to walk the Pier), not I-55 right next to it (found the turkey tracks in the road, all of the old gas stations and tourist attractions, and drove the cobblestone portion as well). Also drove the road to Hana, HI. At the end of the road they say 99% turn around and return on the same road. I am one of those 1%ers that continued on down the dirt road and paths through fields to complete the drive all around the island. As my wife and I drove about 4 miles down the lightly traveled dirt road I saw a small sign for a church and decided to visit. It was a very small church with only about 4 pews on each side of the church, and as I recall one stained glass window. It was on a bluff overlooking the ocean. Beautiful spot. There was a cemetery joining the church and one grave that was marked with a couple of small flags. Upon checking it out, I found that it was the site of Charles Lindberg's burial. Beautiful spot to spend eternity. Continuing on the path through a farmers field, we had to stop and wait until a heifer decided it was OK to pass. It just stood in from of us for about 5 minutes deciding whether it was going to let us pass or not. Awesome memories. The Smokey Mountains, Blueridge Parkway, and Shenandoah NP highways are a fantastic drive in the fall as well and one I may drive again this fall.

Well I am glad to know that I am not alone in the 'got it wrong' category as well. I did copy the link and send it to my niece to see how she does as she wants to continue her college education into Equine Management (I did not know that existed either) after her recent graduation with a degree in History.

I was raised using maps. I currently have a Tom-Tom GPS and I think it takes me through every back road, farmers field, neighborhood, and probably peoples driveway, if I tell it I want the 'Fastest route'. I also wish I could program it to take me the way I want to go, which is, in my opinion, the straightest non major highway on the map. I do not like driving interstate highways, but do like major roads that are not Interstate Highways. Yesterday I drove from PA to NC. A trip I have taken many times. I can make the trip in about 9 hours using a map. Using the GPS it took almost 11 hours to get here. From now on, its Maps for me, except in cities where I have no clue how to get somewhere. The GPS gets a highway in its mind and if you do not drive it, it constantly 'recalculates'. This does not answer your question, but lets you know you are not the only one who gets frustrated with a GPS.

Many many years ago, at the end of hat spring semester of college, I packed my things up in boxes to head home. My college roommate (many of the things he hammered me about I still do) picked up one of the boxes and said if I could not name 10 things in the box in two minutes he was going to throw it all out. From that day on, I have tried to keep the same philosophy. If I haven't used something in a long while, and can't remember what is in a box, I just get rid of it. My wife's Aunt passed away a couple of years ago and now I have a house full of stuff from her house as well as from my wife's grandmothers home. The sentimental value is slowly going away for my wife, and I can see a future ahead with less 'stuff' in the house.

This reminds me a lot of the last time I went skiing. Of course my moves were not quite as slick as none of them were planned, and when all was over I was waiting for the ski response team to bring me down to the bottom of the hill as I had a couple of broken legs. Oh the memories :-)

I just got this in my email, and it must be legitimate, because it is not from some so called Nigerian Prince or anything. I didn't even know my friends from across the pond were that generous. I can't wait to get all my new camera gear, and drive it around in the trunk of my new Ferrari. How could I be so lucky (I think that after the word Dear in the opening, the word 'Idiot' should be included. I am not greedy, does anybody want to split this with me and we could both be multimillionaires. Just attach the necessary ID and we will be well underway to the greatest future ever. :-)

From: Mrs. EVANS PAUL MARK TERRY.
26 Kensington Court,
London, W8 5DL,
England.

Dear ,

I am Mrs. EVANS PAUL TERRY, an English woman who is suffering from cancerous ailment. I am married to Sir Jim paul who also is an Englishman though dead now. My husband worked with the British Railways for over two decade before the cold hand of death took him away on the 23rd of July 2015 at about 2: 00 AM. Our marriage lasted for over a decade without any fruit of the womb.

My husband died after a protracted illness. My husband and I made a vow to uplift the down-trodden and the less-privileged individuals within the United Kingdom, Europe, North and South America, Africa and the rest of the globe as he had passion for persons who can not help themselves due to physical disability or financial predicament. I can adduce this to the fact that he needed a Child from this relationship, which never came. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of 20 Million (20. Million Great Britain Pounds Sterling with an United Bank of Africa Benne Republic know as ( U B A ). Presently, this money is still with the Bank. Recently, my Doctor told me that I have a limited or numbered days on earth and that my life span will not exceed 10days due to the cancerous problems I am suffering from.

Though what bothers me most is the stroke that I have in addition to the cancer. With this hard reality that has befallen my family, and me I have decided to donate this fund to a non-governmental, or a non religious, and or a non profit organization or better still an individual, that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in.

I want a non governmental, or a non religious, and or a non profit organization or better still an individual, that will use this gift which comes from my husbands sweat to fund the upkeep of widows, widowers, orphans, destitute, the down-trodden, physically challenged children, barren-women and persons who prove to be genuinely handicapped financially.

It is often said that blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I do not have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are bourgeois and very wealthy persons and I do not want my husband's hard earned money to be misused or invested into ill perceived ventures. I do not want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner, hence the reason for taking this bold decision.I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be with the Almighty when I eventually pass on. The Almighty will fight my case and I shall hold my peace. I do not need any telephone communication in this regard due to my deteriorating health.

Remember the old saying: Men who go bald in front are thinkers. Men who go bald in back are sexy. When the two meet, they just think they are sexy. I just consider it as having more face to wash. I too am 'growing up through my hair' When I was int the University of Alaskan Fairbanks, the Dean of Students and I were friends. He was a 'chrome dome' and always said that it meant he could now hear the snowflakes.

Dad was Air Force (Army Air Corps at the time) sitting at Hickam Field Dec. 7th, 1941. He was a squadron commander flying B24's. He went to and flew out of Tripoli in North Africa to bomb Germany when he was shot down. Spent 3 years as a POW. Escaped 3 times, recaptured twice. Finally liberated while hiding in a barn by the British. Flew combat Fighters in Korea as well. Lost him in 1998. 35-year Vet. My older Brother, Nieces and a Nephew are all Air Force and served from early 60's to the last one getting out about 3 years ago. I was the 'Black Sheep' of the Family and am the only Navy man in the family (66-69) SALUTE to all former, and present Service Women and Nen. Thank You all for your service.
