One of the other speakers at that photography workshop was John Gregor a Minnesota photographer who recently got a Master's degree with an emphasis on photographic literacy. When it was announced that photographic literacy was his topic I wasn't sure what to expect. Listening to him I found he was speaking my language. He was speaking about that everyone has a camera, most likely in their cell phone and they know how to push the button but they are illiterate about photography and how should it be taught.

If you are interested in this topic (and I think we all are as we are trying to learn) you can poke around at this website.

I took some country roads yesterday. I could see the sun hitting this church and drove a few miles to find it. Then guess what! I tried changing the white balance. I did not like what the tungsten WB did to the field in front at all.

Auto WB

(Download)

Daylight WB - not a lot of difference

(Download)

Florescent WB - a little improvement in the sky color

(Download)

Tungsten WB - no enhancement!

Poor Pixel! I thought the second picture of the flooding in the garden area gave a more sinister look to the water.

The sky pictures were great. I never can catch the lightening either. That is another thing I learned from that Canon Explorer of Light: Professionals cheat. She showed some marvelous pictures of the Perseid Meteor. Canon sends them out to teach and so she told us how she captured the shot. She sets up two cameras pointing to different areas of the sky each taking a picture every 2 second. She then deletes many pictures and keeps the ones showing the meteor!!

Thanks for posting the pumpkin shots. I love fall and those pictures really show one of the nice features of a fall outing.

Your shadow selfie made me smile. I think you may have started a new trend!

Thank you for sharing your learning!! WB has been giving me heartburn too but I have learned more about when not to change it than when too!! LOL. I did learn how to quickly change the WB on the camera (where to find it in the menu) so there was value in this exercise.

Last ones. So, I am totally confused with the differences within the same settings as well as how to know which to use. However, the challenge has made me aware of some settings I've rarely used and should give them more than a second look. Thanks, annac.

No, I am not bored. I love it. The fluorescent setting really makes the blue sky blue! I think that Canon Explorer of Light said she used that to enhance the blue of sky and water. I can see why.

Then I did the fluorescent ones (bored yet?)

I am so glad you learned from this challenge! I am wondering if the differences in the two shots at the same setting were caused by the camera settings. What I mean is if you had it set on aperture priority the camera will auto adjust the speed so there is a possibility the camera picked up the light reading just slightly different and that affected the outcome too. Just thinking outloud. I know that when doing panoramas it is important to use manual settings to avoid those small changes from picture to picture.

Thanks for the documentation. I learn best when pictures affirm the words!

OK, annacady, must say I've learned several things about WB and my camera from this challenge. I have too many but will post them anyway. I found differences even when I shot 2 in same setting. I changed no settings and focused on the same thing as I really wanted to see the differences. These are straight out of the camera.

You too are an inspiration to me. I need stick-to-it like you have instead of looking at my pictures and saying, "Well, here is proof that I don't know what I am doing." Then setting the camera down.

Well, I did find it in detailed info on the LCD of my camera. I added WB to my import preset so, we'll see what happens next time.

Thanks Roadrunner. I cannot tell you how much you have encouraged me. I know I am pretty quiet on UHH but I do read and observe. You have been an inspiration along with all the other regulars on these Challenges.

Next winter when the snow is ''blue'' lower the temperature a bit. I'll try the metadata, that is new to me..See? We're both learning

Thanks for giving us the detail of how you did that. I was very encouraged by your statement that it took less than 3 minutes. I am getting ready to add PP to my photography experience.

I took the original shot with WB in the camera set to Auto, then used the different WB settings in Lightroom 5. The effects are similar whether the settings are in the camera or changed in post. Worthy of note is that if you are going to change the WB in Lightroom, the picture must be imported in Raw format. The only WB options available for jpg images are 'As Shot' and 'Auto'. That's another good reason to shoot in Raw. The final editing was performed in Lightroom 5 from the original. I converted to B&W, cropped for composition, boosted clarity a little, and increased contrast just a touch. I then adjusted highlights and shadows with split toning. Editing time was less than three minutes.
I took the original shot with WB in the camera set... (show quote)

I have been out and about since this noon so sorry for the delay in commenting. I agree, the real challenge is to know what light conditions and colors benefit from an incamera WB change. Today when I was driving back, I took some gravel roads to try to find a picture and I rejected changing WB on most of them because I knew it would not improve anything on the picture.

Thanks for your examples. They helped to figure out which conditions and colors are enhanced with WB adjustments.

..think the difficult part of this would be getting to know what light conditions and colours would benefit from an in camera change in WB. This would be probably unique to each camera as well. Tried a few practice shots in mid afternoon sunlight on each setting then some inside with incandescent flood and then one of those curly fluorescent things which I won't post as all were off. Must note that the camera is a 7 year old Canon power shot A590.

Roadrunner, you made me laugh this morning! I have been trying to find new subject matter but before I take the picture I try to visualize why I might want to use one of those other WB settings (I am trying to learn!). I have to tell you I think I should have slept through the WB part of her lecture!! I am noticing that Tungsten WB seems to always give a cool/cold look to the picture so maybe next winter when I am taking pictures of cold subjects, I will try to change to Tungsten to see if that enhances the picture.

Anyway, I think you have a Canon camera. On the metadata you can find the WB setting if you really wanted to.

Thanks ThomJ4 for your posting. Did you do the WB changes in camera or PP? I think the original is a very nice picture as is the B&W.
