Nice work. It makes me want to try it for myself.

Nice shot. I think one of his relatives lives in my back yard.

That place just needs a little work. Excellent shot.

It is a photograph you processed to bring out more an existing phenomenon.

If we go by the dictum that a photograph should stand alone and explain itself, then your offering falls short in the sense that it requires a caption or words for the viewer to appreciate it as intended.

That said, your photograph makes me curious as to how the condition produces a visible spectrum of light instead of white light.

There was a lot of moisture in the air. A fairly thick layer of mist was gradually clearing as the sun was shining through it. It is the refraction as the light passes thru the droplets of water that produces the rainbow effect. Kinda like a lot of small prisms. I hope this makes sense. Please ask again if I didn't do a good job of explaining. This set of conditions passes quickly as the sun burns off the mist.

I don't have a catchy title in mind. Maybe something like "Nature's Prism".

The attached photograph was shot a few months ago. I live near the ocean and, on some mornings, there is a layer of mist over the area. As the sun comes up, there is an interval in which the mist is still there, but the sun is starting to become visible. During this time, the effects shown in the photo can be seen. It is very difficult to capture with a camera. I have tried many times, but only a few attempts have worked out.

The photo is real and the rainbow effects are naturally occurring. I did, however, use an HDR processing program to enhance the effect. This bring up a question I have had for a while about such things. At what point does it cease to be photography?

This photo was shot using a macro lens. I didn't think that was the right choice for such photographs, but it was the one that was on the camera that morning.

If anyone cares, it was shot using a Fuji X-Pro2 with an 80mm macro lens. The exposure was at 1/125 of a second at F11 and an ISO of 1000.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments.

Very nice. Now we know the secret. I may have to try that myself.

Great pic!! Would be interested the logistics behind the pic.

I am not 100% sure what you are asking, but I will try to respond as best I can.

Hardware: The picture was taken using a Fuji X-pro2 and an 80mm macro lens.

It was shot in the forest where I try to get out for a walk every day. The first important ingredient is to find a spider that has built his web in a spot that is illuminated by the sun. The only way I have found to have the web visible in the finished photo is to have the sunlight reflect off the web. I find there is a 'shine' to the web if you are shooting either toward the sun (not directly into the sun, but at a fairly close angle) or sometimes with the sun almost directly behind you. You have to just find the right angle.

I have tried using a little bit of flash (turned down to 1/128 of the total output). The trick is to get the spider exposed correctly while preserving the web. That is sometimes difficult. I just shoot multiple exposures - that is one of the nice features of digital.

The final step is to try to adjust the image in post processing to render both the web and the spider so that you get the desired effect. I recently picked up an HDR editing program that is designed to extend the dynamic range of the photo. That helped immensely. The program is ideally used with multiple exposures of the exact same image. I didn't do that - I just fed it a single exposure and let it adjust the exposure. The result was what you see above.

If I didn't answer your question, please let me know and I will fill in any details. A lot of the trick to photos like this is just finding the right situation and then shooting the picture immediately. I find the lighting changes rapidly in the forest. The subject is sometimes illuminated by sunlight shining through a gap in the trees. It changes in the time I can take the picture.

Indeed a mystic iridescent shot indeed... but, clone in the upper left corner to be black.

Good suggestion. That is a little bit of the branch that the web was attached to. I would have left the whole thing, but it was overexposed. It would look better with it gone.

I am afraid there is no one thing I can reference. I have tried to get this shot a few times, but this is my best attempt thus far.

Finding the situation is a lot of the issue. The first trick is finding a spider who is being lit by the sun. The shine on the web is only visible when shooting toward the sun or with it almost directly behind you. I have a long lens hood for the lens (a macro lens) and that helps.

The standard problem with this kind of shot is that generally it is possible to have either the web or the spider illuminated properly, but not both. I used a new editing program designed to produce HDR images and that made it possible to have both visible in the finished product.

I guess the only secret is patience and persistence.

A lot of the photos I take are shot in the forest near my home. The spiders are an interesting topic, but are very difficult to capture. Generally, either the spider or the web is correctly exposed, but not both. Recently, I acquired a new photo editing program that seems to have largely resolved the problem. This is my first attempt at getting everything exposed properly.

Nice shot. I grew up in Dover and have been to that refuge many times. Good memories.
