Panzer car of Mark Donahue and Penske, I think that is what killed the Cam-Am series. Can-Am series was my favorite racing series of all time.

I was also a huge fan of The Cam-Am series. I believe that the root cause of that series' demise revolved around economics. There were not enough teams that could afford to field a competitive car to challenge the Porsches. As you pointed out, the run what you brung concept faded away, What remained was an economically unsustainable format. Damn shame
