nikonbug: Merry and Blessed Christmas to you as well.
I'm surprised you didn't get your daughter a D7100 for Christmas, and get her on the Nikon Bandwagon.
Lukan, she is in my will for all my camera equipment... Hope she waits 50 years for it!
Since I shoot w/ a D800e and have many 2.8 lenses, I must differ on the speed of focus. The focus is mostly dependent on the LENS. SWM focus is blindingly fast, while the old motor driven focus is slow and will hunt on occasion. My daughter uses the Canon 40D and she doesn't complain and probably outshoots me. But, it really is a matter of preference and what you started with and what interchanges with what you have.
Merry and Blessed Christmas to all of you.
What I don't like is that the funding for the discounts comes from the 750 billion $$ taken from the Medicare fund. Where did the Medicare fund come from??? Taxpayers. Not a dime from the government. Just you and me now giving that money to "the poor". And why aren't the politicos talking about how it is going to run out of money in 10 years? Watch for the raise in rates down the road. Which will also fund more ACA. "Don't bother me none" I'm retired on Veterans Healthcare Plan...
HDR does bracket. That is how it pops out the contrast.
I would set the camera to HDR if you have that setting, then also set white balance to get more reds (play with that a little), set camera to + vivid, shoot low, from the floor if needed with a wide lens. Try to shoot without flash in natural light, with a window light. Use a reflector to direct light. Don't try to get a art photo with one shot. It may take a hour and many many to get the effect you desire. And most importantly, just have fun with it and you may surprise yourself.
