Tracey you could send the photo to Birdtalk magazine. They would most likely use it & pay some money...& Who couldn't use some. LOL

The cockatoo is called a Galah or also Rose-Breasted.... I live with one who owns me. His name is Porter and I would pay for this photo. Outstanding

bring Bob! :-) seriously, cloudy is your friend...animals are usually out and about if its not sunny. I'm certainly no expert, but bring a tripod & long lens if you have one. If you can't get good exposure with the fstop/speed...always remember to try raising the ISO. I ALWAYS forget this...probably a left over from the film days. But you can easily make grain go away in digital. Good Luck

Thank you. Canon 5D MkII, 70-200 2.8L IS, 1.4x extender.

LOL I have the exact same setup and I can't get shots as crisp as yours! back to practising.

I read that the second generation of this lens had some quality control issues and that it was a tossup whether you got a real sharp one or one of the less sharp ones. It is a problem that Canon is aware of. I suggest you tack up a target, some printed material with sharp edges, on a fence or wall where wind won't bother it, put your tripod mount on the lens, take it off IS, lock up your shutter, and use a remote trigger or the 10 second timer, in a bright but shady area, set the aperture on f7.1 or f8, the sweet spot for the lens, on AV, all to avoid camera shake and see what the results is. Turn off autofocus and focus manually. If you don't get tack sharp pictures, take it up with Canon. As I said, they know the problem exists but don't seem to be inclined to do anything about it of their own volition. I don't know if they would deal with it even if you bring it up to them but it's worth a try. They'll probably have you send it in. It can be two things not related to bad glass. One is that it may need to be calibrated, which will have to be done by them, and the other is that it may need to be checked for proper focus which you can do. The one you can do is referred to as auto focus micro adjustments and you can find out how to do that here:

Thank you I'll give that a try. I just bought this lens and thought I got a newer one, but you never know. Thank you sp much for the info

If you just bought it and got it new, unless it was "new old stock" you probably got the new version. I don't think generation one had the problem. I also think the way to tell if you have the generation two model is by how many slide switches are on the left side of the barrel. Four switches = generation two. The bottom switch says "Type 1 and Type 2."

I was. Looking at a topic yesterday (don't remember which .section) where someone showed a picture.& then showed that same picture with changes. The change looked kinda like someone dragged a stick thru the picture creating swirls. The op said the picture was done in camera with no after work & challenged people to figure out what he/she did. Also promised to eventually say how the picture was made.

I apologize for this loooong message, but I really want to find that topic & this time 'follow' it. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd really appreciate any help. And maybe the OP will respond. :-)
