If someone will teach me how to upload a shot, I will show some of what I did with my Tamron 18 -400 on my Canon D in Africa

I use a Canon 80D so I do have a "crop factor" and I took a Tamron 18-400. Suited every situation. One Black Rino absolutely demanded more but that was one shot out of over 2000. I didn't feel cheated with this lens. Not too heavy either. Regardless, since you are in a safari vehicle nearly 100% of the time, the weight isn't a big factor.

Will see what happens if I re crop the crane pic. That is the jpg but I have the raw file on the disk.

I do try for the eyes, but find the damned birds don't like sitting still (neither does my wife) while Im composing. Probably why I have 2000 shots and so far only a handful of acceptable pics.

Again, thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks. Actually, due to the lighting, some of the shots are already at 1600 ASA. Some less.

Will continue to try. It's the flying birds that are the most difficult and I think that BBF technique (once I get used to it) may help here.

I have photopgraphed flowers for years. Still not much good at it. More recently I have started trying birds...when they hold still for me that is. Have just learned about BBF and will try that.

Looking for criticism, hints etc. So going to post a few I just did in Kenya

Sorry, going to try again. I hit "send" before I meant to. Open to tips on sharper focus, composition....using a Canon 80D with an 18 - 400 mm lens

Thanks

I smile and say thanks.

No sense sitting down next to them pic to pic and pointing out where I feel there should have been post processing work or better exposure. Or perhaps waiting a sconce longer on that sunset. What good comes of that? When I attend a summer art festival and see a photographer displaying his or her works for sale, I can almost "hear" the thoughts of the onlookers "I could do that with my instamatic"..."I just don't have the time."

Well, no you couldn't. That artist knows his camera. he or she knows their post processing techniques and they also know printing. they know a lot that you don't..but why bother off putting others.

As I said, I smile and say "thanks'

Almost everything is post processing. Developing film is technically post processing. In the "old days" when I had access to a dark room, we learned to dodge and burn. There were other techniques but they all fall under post taking the pic processing. Simpler these days with PS and lightroom - have to admit I learned on PS and only know a fraction of it's power and I am lost in LR. Without some kind of post processing, you may as well as had a snap shot...and sometimes that is all you really want.
