I was also born in Portland, but lived in Hillsboro (yes, loved KISN), and then moved to Eugene at age 14.

I appreciate the feedback. HDR is so subjective; no one PP satisfies everyone, but I wanted to dial it back a little on a couple and look at the results. I decided the photo of the falls did need a little more exposure in PP. Thanks for that observation.

I am a native of Oregon and spent many summers in those very areas, so I know the lighthouses well. In fact, we visited Yaquina Head LH in April this year. Love the photos you shared.

I shoot bracketed sets wherever possible, even hand-held, because it gives me the option of processing as HDR or choosing a single best exposure for normal or HDR post-processing. I often dial back certain aspects from presets (I use Photomatic 6) to achieve more realistic results, but the added depth and texture I keep is the difference between blah and bang.

I like the last one! 19 shots for focus stacking, that was amazing sharp! I believe there was no wind at all during the shots, then the flower will maintain still. Good work!

Focus stacking is easiest if there is no wind. I find that PS will align photos where there is a small amount of movement, but the tolerance for wind is low.

I shot these over the summer when my flowers were in full bloom. The first 3 were shot with an 18-140mm lens. For the last one I was shooting with a 105 micro and used focus stacking involving 19 frames merged in PS. That bloom is only about an inch tall.

I am headed to Ireland a week from today and taking a group of 12. It will be my 6th trip there, but I hope my most photographically productive. I am going to take a tripod this time, even though I really cannot use it while with the group. I figure on free time, especially early morning and late evening, I can get a few nice photos.

These are a few photos I shot in Austria in 2012, before I started shooting everything RAW. As a result, my post-processing options were a little constrained and the detail is not as good. I also get a little restricted in taking photos because I am hosting a group, aka herding cats. Anytime I look at old photos I see the things I should have done differently! Still, if you want to take nice photos, the easiest way to start is to go to a beautiful place!

A couple of my favorites from my most recent trip to Austria. I usually get up early when I am in St. Gilgen and watch/shoot the sunrise over the lake. That morning I almost went back to sleep because things were fogged in, but I got up anyway and was rewarded for it. However, I did not take my tripod so I had to push the ISO higher than I would have preferred.

The second photo was while I was waiting for a couple members of my group to show up at our meeting spot. I had walked by that spot a dozen times on previous trips and never noticed the great texture of that little scene. In the immortal words of Ferris Buehler, "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

I appreciate the comments! I am far from a novice to photography, old enough to have learned using film. However, digital is different, with more post-processing power. That is where I have been trying to focus my growth and UHH members have contributed a lot to that process.

I have been reading posts every day for several months and have appreciated the advice and examples of remarkable photography. I thought it was time to express that appreciation. What better way than with a photo I learned how to shoot from discussions and links here! This was earlier today in my front yard, a geranium that had not bloomed all summer that finally decided to get going.
